 Questions (Atrax, ya there?)

Alright, so I have a few questions about my anole that aren’t on the caresheet.

First off, when I got him, he was being mishandled by a "baby dragon" dealer at a Renaissance Faire. He had been living in what looked like some kind of small bird cage with an amazing amount of other anoles, both male and female. He was being shown around to those who approached the table full of even more anoles in little plastic cages. His skin color was a very very dark brown, and the guy tried to tell me that that was because we were all wearing dark shirts. Anyway, I didn’t like the conditions and even though I’ve never had a reptile before, bought him and took him home.

I’ve done the research and set up his habitat. He’s got a 20-gallon tank with fake plants on one side, and some fake sticks on the basking side. The lighting during the day is provided by a fluorescent 5% UVB bulb. The basking light is a desk lamp resting on the wire mesh on top the cage, with an infrared 50w incandescent bulb. The only time I handle him is when he has to be moved from the cage.

Anyway, when I got him, the tip of his snout was pink. I’m wondering if it’s a bruise from being with all those other male anoles. He also has a little bump near the end of his tail, and after that it’s just so incredibly thin and brown that it gives off the appearance that the tip is dead or something. Also, the ridges from his eyes to his nose have also been brown this whole time, but I figured those were just abberant chromatophores you mentioned in another thread. It used to be the whole tip of his snout was brown when I got him, but since then it’s changed to green.

Can you tell me if there is anything going on with him? I was hesitant to take him to the vet because there’s only one in our area that deals with exotic creatures, and she isn’t all that great with them. She’s really good with typical pets like cats and dogs, but with rats, guinea pigs, and other exotic creatures, she’s given us some information that we’ve learned from other pet owners could kill our pets, so we’ve learned to be careful and research more.

Anoles will sometimes rub the end of their snout raw rubbing it against the screen on the enclosure. Sounds like a cyst or possible tumor near the end of the tail and the tip might be dead. If so, it will drop off and likely regenerate. You can feed him waxworms to fatten him up. I would only do so at every other feeding. Anoles love them so much that a constant diet will sometimes cause them to reject other food items. The coloration can be a variety of things. It sometimes takes an Anole awhile to become accustomed to his new environment.

yeah, dont feed too many wax worms.. i think that they must taste a bit better than crickets because when i originally fed them waxworms they wouldnt eat crickets for about a week

Thank you thank you.

So will the raw snout heal on its own or is there something I can do to treat it? Or do I need to take him to a vet? (Not the one I mentioned before but one of the recommended ones listed on this site.)

When you say the tail will drop off and regenerate, do you mean the entire tail? That would take care of the cyst or tumor, right? In the meantime, should I get it looked at and treated or just wait for the tail to drop?

I didn’t know he needed fattening up, he’s been eating pretty well. I feed him small live crickets every other day. I gut load them, and then once a week I powder the doomed meal with calcium dusting.

When I first got him, he’d only eat two crickets and eat the third later. Now he eats three crickets and the fourth a little later. How can I tell if he’s too thin? Should I still feed him some wax worms or save the idea for if he ever stops eating?

Bruised snout, and something sticking up on his head (beginning to molt or something else?

And his tail. It can be really hard to see the part that looks dead because it’s so thin and dark brown, and he’s on his log.

The incredibly thin dark brown part at the end of the tail, that looked dead, has fallen off. He still has the bump/tumor/cyst on his tail. I thought the bruise at the end of his snout was pink but it’s more brown. Does this imply scabbing/healng?
