Looking for a good Organic Potting Soil

Hey all. I recently have run out of the organic soil I have been using for my reptiles. So, I went to a nearby greenery hoping that I could find the soil I was looking for there. To my dissatisfaction, they no longer carry the product I was looking for. So now I am stuck trying to find a NEW organic soil substrate.

I purchased Miracle Gro’s Organic Potting Mix, but after purchasing it and returning to my home I realized that it contained bark fines and fertilizers which are no good for the little anoles, so now I am gonna have to return it. Yet now I am stuck as to what to use then for a substrate for my anoles?

Their home needs a thorough cleaning, and I don’t want to put in a substrate that will harm them. I live in MD, by the way, and it seems like all of the garden supply stores carry ONLY this brand for organic potting soil. The last time I found a nice organic top soil, and that seemed to work great, yet now I am stuck with finding a new soil that will do the job and not harm my anoles.

are you set on potting soil?

if not, i would go with coco fiber bricks. one of those is enough to cover a 50/55 gallon aquarium.

you could also use peat moss.

just some suggestions.

Is Peat Moss really OK for the anoles if accidentally injested? I did manage to find a place that carried the same soil as I have been using (and that has seemed to work fine for my anoles over the past year). So I am considering either getting the same soil (which is only like $1 something per 20 lbs.) or getting the Peat Moss.

Go to one of the larger stores like Lowe’s or Home Depot. They usually have 40-50 lb bags of either organic potting soil or, my favorite, organic compost for a few $$.

I got the peat moss. I just could not find a decent organic potting soil without fertilizer or bark fines nor an organic compost. One Organic Potting Soil/Top Soil (it was a mix) had Soil Conditioner put into it, and I saw some organic compost but it also had the soil conditioner, and I was worried it would be unsafe for the little anoles if injested (which is often the case esp. with one of my females, who ravenously goes after the crickets and almost always gets soil in her mouth), so I just didn’t risk it. I don’t have real plants, so if the peat moss is harmless like Gretchenellie said than that will do just fine. :) It has nothing in it but the peat moss. No fertilizers, nothing.
