How does an anole tell another anole’s gender? How does a male anole tell if another anole is female or male? And what if that second (female) anole is juvenile and the first (male) is mature? Do they just know?

How does an anole tell another anole’s gender? Not always. Sometimes a Juvie will act as a female in order to get close to the other females to mate with them, so it is then able to fool the male into thinking it is a female and accept it into his territory. I had a juvie which did that once, I was still young though so when I purchased it I had no idea how to truly determine its gender, so I just immediately returned it. Plus there were no websites online or forums that told me how to properly sex an anole, and even the owner of the pet store could not tell me or knew how. It was a sexaholic. It tried mating with every female in sight. Heck, it got to the point where it tried mating with my male Simon (he along with the others at the time died long ago). O_o

How does an anole tell another anole’s gender? So if they bob their head instead of extending a full red dewlap too, do they come off as female to another anole?

Well, unless there are obvious factors like size (a full-fledged adult male is a heck of a lot larger generally than an adult female), then yes, a juvie could get away with passing off as a female. And often times male juvies will not extend their dewlaps to adult males, because it can be seen as a threat display towards the more mature adult male, and so the juvies instead will just simply "bob" their heads in submission without displaying their dewlaps to the larger adult male.

How does an anole tell another anole’s gender? Yet of course females also have dewlaps, and some as bright and colorful as an adult males. Yet I am sure you were already aware of this. Females usually display theirs in dominance and threat displays over other females and younger/smaller anoles, and sometimes during mating rituals (but I have yet to see a female do this, I usually just see them bob their heads in submission without displaying their dewlap).

How does an anole tell another anole’s gender? NO, females do have a dewlap...the first time i ever saw my anoles mate, the female displayed it to the male. Also, the females in my tank do it to eachother to assert dominance

How does an anole tell another anole’s gender? Umm, females cannot mate with one another. Generally that means you have a juvie in the group. Did you check for the postanal scales/pores? Or they may "mount" over another female for dominance, but not necessarily mate. Unless it is a juvie, they are probably mounting over the other female for dominance OR you have a juvie.

How does an anole tell another anole’s gender? Wait, I think we got off track. Who said anything about females trying to mate with each other? I am so confused now.

How does an anole tell another anole’s gender?
I think they just ask "Hey! What’s up?" "are you male/female?" "ok cool, cya!" :D :P
