 Food For Anoles

Do anoles eat anything else but bugs, like fruit or veggies?

Funny responses here, hehe. Anole, are you making sure your crickets are gut-loaded? And are you dusting the soon-to-be-eaten ones with calcium dusting, once a week? Crickets don’t offer much nutrients on their own, which is why this will help keep your anole or anoles healthy.

gut loading basically just means feeding the crickets, it doesnt have to be fancy, i just feed them slices of potatoes..about twice a week or so dust them. There are several ways to do so. The easiest way is placing the crickets to be fed in a small bag with a small amount of the powder and shake the bag

Green anoles seem to enjoy apricots and peaches as fruits as I’ve discovered. I feed them it occasionally for a variety in their diet.

ok heres something odd...ill admit that i didnt believe Emma that anoles eat fruit, but last week i was eating an apple, and I just ripped off a small soft piece from part of it, and set it down next to one of my anoles and she ate it. At first I thought that she just assumed it was a bug of some sort so i did it several more times and Every time my anole would eat it

That is odd since Anoles rarely eat food that isn’t moving, but yes, some fruits can be used as PART of their diet, when one of my anoles was sick I fed him mushed baby food, peaches and apricot. I wouldn’t give an anole apple pieces because I would assume the food could be too hard for them to chew with their little teeth.

I think that anoles like some fruits, like certain ones eat a little. But in my opinion if u think what McDonald’s does to us, what does it do for the anoles? HA-HA guess who??? Also does anybody have any ideas as to how to lower the cost of getting an anole??

while anoles are "cheap" lizards, they are rather expensive for all of the necessary items that they need. If you want i can suggest the most inexpensive items that i know of.

For UVB/Fleuorescent light: reptiglo 5.0 at my store is 17.99 at my petsmart for an 18"

For the strip lamp for the bulb: The hoodlamp alone is quite expensive(35.00) but a product by ESU comes with its own UVB inside for 31.99 at my store. Note that the actual light itself produces less than satisfactory levels of UVB(about 3%) and UVA. i just bought it for the lamp itself

For the cage: At petsmart a 10 gallon(1 anole) can range from 8.50 to 10.99(petsmart brand cage)

For the Basking Lamp: Go to home depot and get one for 5.99

For Incandescent light: Just a normal bulb will do, they emit uva i think (really cheap) or get a neodymium bulb at a petstore cuch as dayglo, etc. for about 4.99 to 8.99

For plants: I suggest getting real plants as they are only a few $$ and very easy to maintain

For Screen Cover: If your walmart has a pet section you can get a plastic screen cover for only 6.99(pet smart = 8.99) If its a plastic one though you must buy metal covers for the lamps which are also a few$

Anole741, I tend to feed my crickets Fluker’s Cricket Quencher from the pet store. The reason for this is because it contains calcium and vitamin D, and is moist enough to keep the crickets hydrated (so food and water in one!). You never want to just give them a bowl of water unless it’s extremely shallow, because they’ll be dumb enough to drown in it while trying to get a drink.

If they don’t have something moist to keep them hydrated, they turn cannibalistic on each other (yikes) and can even end up attacking your anoles. This is why you should never leave crickets in the tank with your anole after he has eaten. If you do leave them in, I’ve read that leaving in a piece of a carrot in the tank will help keep them hydrated.

As for the calcium dusting, you can buy that easily at a pet store. Dust the anoles soon-to-be-meal with calcium dusting once a week.

crickets can have a water bowl as long as there is someone to let them get out/prevent them from drowning. But i dont do that anyway. Btw, for flukers, the yellow and blue products arent food. They are simly polyacrylamide copolymer i think(the water stuff). The orange cubes are supposed to be food and water

Thank you for catching that. I should have taken my own advice and not listened to the lady at the pet store. She’d told me it’d act as both. Could be why 1/4 of my crickets die on me.

It’s also pretty nice of Fluker’s Farms that with every tube of crickets they send out, they’re including their Fluker’s Orange Cube.

in that case the crickets are worth it that way..my petsmart sells the orange stuff for 7.50, yellow for 3.49(calcium fortified) and blue for 3.29. Since the crickets are 7$ per 100 in a tube on that website, its worth it. The cheapest place i know to buy crickets is cricketfactory.com, 1000 crickets for 10.75$

I always wondered, if the crickets have air holes couldn’t the dusting suffocate them?

I always dust VERY lightly, and re-feed the crickets in the anole habitat. I see crickets tasting the Cal Dust that I sprinkle on their fresh fruit.

In case you ever raised baby mice, we used to feed the weanlings a crust of bread dipped in milk. In a small jar lid. So I also wonder if orange juice would feed crickets w/o spoiling as fast as milk?

I confess!! I do not want to buy extra stuff, it’s $9 every new UV bulb. Hope I did not stray too far from topic.

That is a pretty amazing deal. It’s unfortunate they only sell in bulk, but I can’t imagine them pricing 50-100 crickets if their prices are already so cheap.

I just dust mine once a week--not the whole lot, just the ones I’m about to feed the lizards. Always assumed the crickets never lived long enough to suffocate; my anoles tend to eat them pretty fast.
