I had two males in a tank with one female. The males fought so much that no breeding took place. I separated the two males so that the younger male would eat more. Now Ted and Diamondback are breeding fools!!! At first Diamond back was dropping her eggs, unfertilized on the substrate. Now since the two males are separated, she is burying them and they are nice and firm white eggs...i assume fertile. I have removed the eggs and I am incubating them in a separate container. I only have a 10 gallon so I don’t want them to stay in the enclosure. |

Definitely don’t keep males together in a tank. Once they mature, they just get very aggressive, which can mean the submissive male or males being stressed out all the time, and being deprived of food. Find out for sure the gender of all your anoles. If they’re brown/bahaman anoles, finding out the gender is easy. Females have a diamond-shaped pattern running along their back, while the males don’t. If you have green anoles, finding out the gender can be a bit more difficult. Don’t judge by the white stripe they might have--both males and females have this when they’re juvenile. The male tend to lose theirs when they mature (but not always!). Quoting DragonTU84 here, "The mature males will often be rather larger, and have larger, more prominent heads and snouts than the females, and of course exhibit a much larger dewlap. ... The females are often smaller, and with a head and snout more in proportion to the body, and can also exhibit dewlaps, but are often smaller and less frequently displayed/seen." The ultimate way to find out the gender is by the postanal scale test, and this is the best indicator out there. Males have two enlarged scales below the crotch while females don’t. A good thread that depicts pictures to help you out is: Link (thank you, BCJC) Now if you’re anoles are too hard to catch, you can examine them while they’re up in a glass. DragonTU84 suggests a magnifying glass to help look for the enlarged scales (more from DragonTU84’s post can be found here: Link) Next, note the size of your anoles and try to figure out if they’re mature or juvenile. If they’re juvenile, they aren’t ready to mate. |
