 Update on the release...

So.. I know Atrax and coolguy know about the release of my anole "Annis". I rescued him from a car carrier that came from Florida. So he was a brown anole like the kind you buy from the pet stores..well here is a pic. Anyways.. I was waiting for it to warm up here.. being I live in a real warm area.. NC on the coast..and thought it would be a good idea to let him BACK into the wild. Now, dont get me wrong.. I dont believe in releasing CAPTIVE BRED animals/reptiles into the wild... but wild ones are ok. I was just nervous! Well Atrax told me he was a he.. which is good, he cant wipe out the green ones here.. and I let him go at my husbands moms house in the country with a bunch of anoles. Well.... she said she saw him and even got a pic!!!! So, I was sooooo relieved when she told me this! I just want you guys to know... I am not a mean person.. I just couldnt care for him and he belonged in the wild. I will get the pic from her here in a couple days and show you guys. Here is a couple from when I had him!

Thanks for letting me vent! Lauren~

 Update on the release...

Hi there. I’m new to this forum and signed up to research f a brown anole I found with hypomelanism.

I know you were trying to do right by that lizard by letting him go, but I think it may have been kinder had you stuck him in the freezer for a humane kill. I hope they are more sensitive to temperature than Carolina Anoles, and that it will die from the cold; but I suspect they could become an epidemic in your area as they are here in Florida.

As a child visiting Florida my favorite pastime was scouring the bushes for the docile and elegant green anoles that were abundant in every yard. One day, a few years ago, I looked around and realized that they had been replaced by the aggressive brown anoles from Cuba. It is disconcerting to walk into my garden surrounded by the scurry of the brown anoles. Admittedly, they are interesting creatures, but the few remaining greens have been pushed up into the trees, and I swear they look depressed!

Chances are slim that your male would ever find a female of the same species, but invasive breeding populations are started by well meaning people just like yourself.

This message is for you and anyone else who may consider releasing a non-native species: Please, please, please don’t do it. The long-term consequences could devastate native populations, far outweighing any possible benefit to a single animal (assuming there is a benefit at all).

 Update on the release...

Well several things. First, how sure are you that your anole is hypomelanistic. Anoles have three layers of chromatophores including melanophores which would be reduced. This would make your anole probably be very pale. Put up a pic so people can see, several people in the past have claimed to have "albino" anoles and none of them ever have shown pics or responded back. Of all the anole pics that i have ever seen, only one anole has ever been a possible albino that i think is true. This is a pic of it.

Does yours look anything similar even though this is a green anole? Also, i would not consider sticking an animal in a freezer to be humane exactly, more along the lines of cruelty if you ask me. Also, brown anoles dont come anywhere near where he lives. The northernmost brown anole recorded is in central georgia. The chances of someone else releasing a female brown anole in his area are astronomical.
