 It’s so hot...

It’s so hot here on the east coast.. that all the crickets from the pet store dropped dead on the way home.

In the Carolinas. It’s been in the mid 90s, but thankfully I just heard on the weather that it’s gonna get cloudy and rainy. No sign of it yet though, just bright... and hot...

You obviously must be a minor whose parents pay for most or everything you get, so let me point something out to you. When you are supporting yourself or at least paying for the things you buy like most the rest of us, losing crickets on the way home just because it’s really hot out is not cool. Even if crickets are cheap ($3 for 30), that’s $3 lost, not to mention gas money and wasting time. We can’t all be well off financially. Some people find themselves in a state where you have to really be careful where your money goes. Get it? So no, not cool, and saying it is is just immature, SlowChild.

ReptiGal, that was smart thinking. It’s been hot for a while here but it would have been nice if I could have tried that. I get 30 crickets every six days, and the last time I got some, half of them died, which puzzled me. I thought maybe they just weren’t healthy when they were bought, but seeing how it went today, my guess is the heat did them in.

Sometimes I consider taking Atrax’s advice and breeding my own crickets, but then I’d have to dish out money up front for a new tank and other supplies, which isn’t a good idea financially for me at this time. I know buying crickets slow and gradually isn’t much better either, because you’re still losing money in the long run, but it’s the only thing I can afford right now. Besides, I have a feeling my cat would go nuts if there was a tank of crickets. She loves eating bugs, she’s spastic over anything that moves (and some things that don’t) and I have to put the cricket feeder on the 5th shelf up just so she can’t reach it.

Yeah, I used to do that.I live right beside a pet store and volunteer there so I got free crickets. Then summer came.....v.v
Actually if you buy ice cream, those gallon buckets seem to be doing good for my crix.I have a hole piece of bread in there(which is about half gone now) and a part of an egg carton and not a single one has died.I think there’s actually more in there now so that’s what I’m going to do from now on.I used to get just enough for my gecko, agamas, and anoles and they’d all finish off about 4 dozen in about 10 minutes so I didn’t worry about getting cages. Now I don’t have my gecko or agamas anymore(long story short:my mom got mad and sold them) so I instinctively got 4 dozen and realized,"Oops, now who’s gonna eat all those?" and just got a random bucket.
lol I’m ranting but it’s actually been pretty useful and my cat can’t see anything inside of it.

Sorry that your Mom sold your reptiles, that’s pretty harsh. Although when I was younger, I doubt my Mom would have even let me have a reptile. I had rats once when I started college and she never let me bring them home except for when I changing colleges and about to get an apartment of my own. I had to keep them in my room with a towel over the cage, not take them out at all, or even mention them. I didn’t let her know that I’d taken one out, put a little rat harness on him, and taken him for a stroll in the lowest level of the house to eat buggies (it was that time of year when the hunchbacked looking crickets here try to invade homes). Now that was funny. I figured I was doing her a favor! ;)

 It’s so hot...

Heh yeah.It started out with my dad getting my sister and I 2 iguanas to help us stop catching anoles(we were like, 8 and kept them in our bedroom drawers and loose throughout our house) so we said we’d stop catching them and we got iguanas.Well my sister’s iguana died at age 4 due to a log falling on her back :( so we started catching anoles again(not keeping them in drawers anymore since we were older and had money). Then we convinced our mom to bring us to a reptile show "just to look" and came home with a baby red iguana for my sister. After that, our mom had told us we could get whatever we wanted with our money so we "went out for a walk" and surprised our mom with our new pet butterfly agama that we had rescued.
Well she wasn’t eating so we decided to buy her "friend" that she had been living with for 4 years.Needless to say,she started eating again. :)
About a week later my mom was tired of us not cleaning the house so she said that if I cleaned the house she’d give me $60.So unlike normal teenagers, I spent it on a leopard gecko.I came home with a beautiful baby leopard gecko,an enclosure, lights, crickets(which my mom is deathly afraid of bugs, and anything else I could need for a leo.
I think when I told my mom I was going to get a tarantula next was when she snapped.

Lol funny about the rats.We used to breed rats when we lived in colorado so my mom doesn’t mind them.Did your mom get rid of your rats?
I didn’t know they eat bugs. O.o

Nah, she didn’t get rid of them. She didn’t want to go anywhere near them. Rats’ll eat anything, really, which is why you have to be careful in what you give them. We used to give one of ’em a big fat beetle when we’d find one, and he’d hold it like a cheeseburger and eat it like one too. They’re hunters and scavengers, they’ll go for anything. My roommate back in college once put a brick in their cage. The one rat took a nibble, found it inedible, and left it alone, but Alex was apparently more "WHAT’S IN DA MIDDLE?" and started CHEWING on it. My roommate had to remove the brick because she said his teeth started bleeding. It must not have been too bad though, because when I came home he seemed fine. Still, you have to be careful what you feed rats.

Forgot to mention, aside from seeds, rats will also eat veggies. It’s good for them, provided you use the right kind and in moderation. My second roommate was a bit of an aspiring cook and enjoyed making a nice little salad of carrots, celery, and parsnips for them. They can eat fruit too but only the kind that doesn’t naturally have sugar in it, like mangos. Sugar is bad for rats, and they can’t vomit, so if it gets ingested, the rat could die.

Wow! Mine ate dog food, and sometimes steak and other table scraps but I didn’t think they’d ever chew on a BRICK!Lol that’s kinda funny.I don’t think I’ll be getting rats again for a long time though since we live in apartments. We had them in apartments before when I was 6 or 7 but I accidentally told the apartment manager that we had rats and didn’t know they weren’t allowed.
Now I get kicked out of Winn-Dixie(I live behind one) for bringing animals in since it’s a health hazard.I told them it was my seeing-eye iguana.lol, they told me if I brought him back I wouldn’t be able to come back again. They didn’t mind the duck I brought in though. O.o

Heh I’ve used that with everything.I once hid an agama in my fishnet sleeve to go in for some milk real quick and they seemed to notice that right away but it took them around 20 mins to notice the iguana on my shoulder that time.
I bring my pets everywhere.I got detention in 3rd or 4th grade(can’t remember which) because I found a tarantula in my desk and kept it for the rest of the day.I yelled at the principle when he tried to step on it.And I’m well known for setting anoles loose during class.
