What happened this morning was a huge shock! There war an egg in each of the lizard tanks! I know they are not fertilized, but I want to know why these two females were acting like males? In addition I would like to get a male anole, but my pet shop doesn’t sex them, What can I do? |

My guess is, the females tried to see who was the dominating one, and the one that turned brown became the submissive one. I only own one female so I can’t say for sure, but I know when male anoles fight, the loser turns brown (there’s articles about this online, as well as YouTube videos of wild green anoles). You could probably put both the females together, and add a male (I’d quarantine him first for at least a month, so that if he’s sick or infected, you’ll find out, rather than passing it on to your other two anoles), but I’d get someone else’s opinion first, like Atrax. He’s been raising anoles for a really long time and would know the answer to all this. You can go to the pet store and find out the gender of the anoles yourself. This post (Link) from this forum shows the best method there is. With that knowledge, I was able to find a a female from the batch of anoles from my local pet store (the employees didn’t know how to sex them, either). Also, I pulled this from Atrax’s Caresheet (), I think it will help you: Link Also, aside from a UVB bulb (which you’ll want to be sure is not a coil bulb, they can cause blindness and don’t spread the UVB across the tank properly), you’ll want an incandescent light (e.g. a regular 60watt desk lamp bulb) to place on the top of one side of the tank. This is their basking light. You see, they need two temperatures available inside the tank. One is the regular temperature (and you’ll need to apply a thermometer to monitor this) and the other is the basking side, which is very important to anoles (also need another thermometer there). Make sure the top is a mesh screen and not glass or plastic. This way the anoles receive their light and heat as intended. Remember to provide lots of leafage, as they are climbers and will also need to be able to hide when they like (otherwise they can get stressed). Another quote from Atrax’s Caresheet: Quote: You should also supply some branches for the Anoles to climb on. You can use dead branches from outside that have been sterilized in the oven for 30 minutes at 300 degrees to kill any mites or other "nasties". The branches should be at least as big around as the Anole’s body. Artificial caves or other ground shelters are not needed. The Anole will be happy to hide and sleep among the plants.
