Atrax? Or someone--my anoles keep opening their mouths for a few seconds, why?

I put my two anoles into their new taller tank and watched them settle in. I started to observe just now that they’ve both been opening their mouths and keeping them open for 2-5 seconds I figured it either meant they were thirsty or yawning. I sprayed a bit earlier but the droplets already dried on the fake plants, so I sprayed again. They’re still doing it though. What does this mean?

I think they stopped some time after, can’t be sure (they’re good at hiding), but I’d still like to know what caused it, just to know. Anyone have any idea?

Are they breathing rapidly as well?

If they were, it didn’t stand out to my knowledge because I don’t recall. I just remember them seeming calm and opening their mouths. I saw one this morning and the other right now, and they’re not doing it anymore, but I still want to find out what causes that and what it means.

Opening their mouth at one another can be a fighting stance, or a submisive stance. Something to warn actually. Its a back up I will bite type of thing. They open their mouth to be threatening, like a dog will nip at you, the lizards when frightened or threatened will open their mouths to show they can fight.

BUT if your temperatures are too low or the tank is located near a drafty area like window or door. And you hear heavy breathing or clicking/wheezing when they breath then it could be a possible Respiratory Tract Infection (RI) which needs the temps to be raised along with a slight humidity rise and if it doesnt get better soon then a vet visit for proper medications.

But it sounds like it was more of the first option. They were being territorial type of thing.

I recognize this, one of my anoles did it alot when I was treating her eye infection. I think its like annoyance or something, when their irritated or stressed. I don’t think its aggression or territory like the others have suggested because the way you described it, Twilight, it didn’t sound like it was wide open mouths trying to bite kind of mouth opening.

Still its a bit confusing on why they do it.

The basking temperature is too low, but I’m working on that. I had just put them in there and out of this big tank, they were both very close to each other (female and male) and were alternating opening their mouths for a moment and then closing. I don’t recall rapid breathing. It seemed almost more casual. They only did it on that day for a while and I haven’t seen either do it since.
