 HUGE anoles!!!

So I just got back from spending the weekend down in Georgia for a bday party for my cousin and I decided to go on a little herping trip and see how different the reptiles down there were from Florida.Turns out, everything is super sized! The anoles down in Florida are mostly brown anoles and very few greens. They’re usually all around 5 inches at most.In Georgia, it’s the exact opposite. There are green anoles EVERYWHERE and they’re about the size of a 2 week old iguana.
So, I just felt like sharing that.Unfortunately I didn’t bring my camera so I have no pictures but it was pretty fun.

 HUGE anoles!!!

Reptiles grow throughout their lifespan. The result is that the older ones are usually the biggest individuals. Winter temperatures have the effect of culling the population and the first ones to go are the older and weaker specimens.
There were a couple of years of abnormally mild winter temperatures along the North Carolina coast a few years back. The population of Green Anoles on Oak Island the third year had some very large individuals in it. I saw several large males that approached 11" in length. They were probably 3-4 years old which is quite old for a wild specimen. The following year, normal temperatures re-appeared and almost all of the large individuals disappeared - casualities of "winter-kill".
