 How’s my anole setup?

Tank contains:
  • Organic top soil (no perlite, fertilizer, or additives)
  • Plastic plants
  • Wooden branches (bought from pet store)
  • 100w incandescent basking bulb (inside the upside-down gray lamp)
  • 5.0 UVB fluorescent tube bulb and canopy
  • Water dish (for the heck of it)
  • Round thermometer for basking side
  • Hygrometer
  • Liquid thermometer strip for regular temperature (until I can buy a round thermometer)
  • Two green anoles (one male, one female)

    Front View:

    Side View:

    Amelia (female, possibly a juvenile):

    Brennos (male, mature):

Are there two many leaves? The pictures don’t quite show the depth/distance of the leaves inside, but it dips down near the corner so that they can’t get too close to the basking light. There’s also a hollow space near the front bottom, because I was hoping the lizards would be able to see better when I put crickets in.

My problem is this: The last two times I fed them, I don’t think Brennos ate anything. The last time I got worried, took him out, and gently tried to hand-feed him crickets, which he accepted doing after a little while, and then put him back in the tank. Every time Amelia has always been quick to do her "death from above" routine, climbing down leaves quickly, striking and grabbing a cricket, and then hurrying back up the leaves. However, today neither of them went for the crickets. I think they just don’t know crickets are in the tank.

the tank looks great TwilightRealm, looks like u got all the good stuff. Right amount of plants and everything else too. Im pretty sure there is no such thing as too many plants(if there is well that certainly isnt it).You said that you think they arent aware of the crickets in the tank. I originally had this problem with my knight anole. Originally, i just put in the crickets through the top like i did with my green anoles, but pretty soon after(like 5 seconds) they would just climb into the plants making it impossible for my knight anole to find them. What i started to do was place the crickets on the plant nearest my anole in a place that is in full view of them, so that the anoles know where the crickets are. Maybe you could try that.

Thank you, I’ll have to try it. If it has to rain crickets for them to get the picture, so help me, it will. I don’t think either of them ate a single cricket today. For Amelia she could miss a day and be fine, because she’s always been good on eating, but the last two feedings Brennos didn’t even bother (but I don’t think he knew there were crickets about). The last time I had to hand feed him, which can’t be fun for him, so on Tuesday I’ll pin point where they are and sprinkle some crickets nearby, and see how that goes.

You would be surprised at how adept Anoles are at finding prey items. I usually put a couple dozen crickets in the enclosure every few weeks (they are supplemented with wild caught prey items). I take a "census" at night at a food container that I provide for the crickets. There are usually none left at the end of a week or 10 days.
If you watch closely, the crickets come out early in the morning and wander around. The Anoles pick them off then and, if you aren’t watching carefully, you will miss it.

Yeah, I don’t see any crickets now except for two dead ones. But my real worry is, if I can’t watch them eat, how will I know if one isn’t eating? Or if one is hogging all the crickets. When I first introduced a female to my male, my worry was that he would stress her out and not let her eat, and for a while I did have to sprinkle some more crickets in for her, but then they compromised, and now she’s the real huntress, always getting to the crickets fast, while he seems to be slower. The last two feedings I don’t even know if he ate anything (except for when I hand-fed him to make sure he wasn’t seriously not eating). When they were in their 20-gallon tank, I used to be able to keep track of how many crickets each ate. I’ve always put in 10 gut-loaded (sometimes dusted) crickets for the two of them, every other day (is this a good number or should it be more/less?).

Last time I fed them, I noticed two days later (after posting) two live crickets moving around on the substrate. Yesterday I fed them by sprinkling crickets from the top, but I’m not sure if the male noticed/cared and only the female took direct action. Today I saw one cricket moving around in the enclosure. I want to assume that this means both are eating (it’s hard to imagine the female eating the whole lot; I usually put 10 in but yesterday I put 10 in and then when I realized the male had moved, sprinkled about 5-7 more on top near where he was hiding under some leaves). How many crickets do you generally feed two anoles, Atrax?
