Did you do what Nayte said?

Quote:

Anoles are picky eaters. Make sure what you are feeding them is alive, such as the crickets. You can also try mealworms. =)

I wouldn’t try mealworms, though, their exterior can be too tough. Anoles are picky and most won’t eat mealworms.

1. Are you feeding him live crickets every other day?

2. Are you gut-loading the crickets? Crickets offer very little nutrition, which is why they are gut-loaded. This means you feed them nutritious stuff and then the lizard eats the crickets and gets the nutrition. Try Fluker’s Orange Cube, maybe some Fluker’s Thirst Quencher on the side. There are alternatives, like certain foods, that you can feed them. You can research this.

3. Are you using a 5.0 UVB fluorescent tube (not coil) bulb for his overall lighting (I don’t mean basking light but the other one)? UVB helps the lizard digest the calcium that he eats from the gut-loaded crickets. A UVB (NOT UVA, but UVB) is vitally important for your lizard.

If you answered yes to all of these, I’d go and buy some waxworms. Give him some, not too many, as it’s a very addictive and tasty treat to anoles. Then unless you can get better advice from someone on the forums, I’d probably take him to the vet and ask to get a check-up (has he ever had one?).

most petsmart or petco stores have them....they keep them refrigerated for some reason at my store even though i am sure that waxworms do much better when they are kept in a warm temp. If you cant find any at your store ask an employee.

They stay in the larval stage longer when kept at lower tempertures. If you want to raise them (see Raising Feeder Insects), you can keep them at room temperature.

What they said.

Also, what have you been using for the regular lighting in your anole’s habitat? They need a 5.0 UVB fluorescent light. You can get this at any pet store. Don’t buy any bulb that doesn’t mention UVB. UVB helps anoles absorb calcium properly, which they need for bone and nerve cell building and repair. Without it, they’ll get a condition similar to osteoporosis, and nerve damage. Get a UVB light, and make sure it’s a tube bulb (not coil). Coil bulbs can cause blindness to your lizards. You can buy a canopy to hold the light. Place it 12-18 inches from where your anole will spend most of the time, and don’t have glass or plastic between the bulb or anole. A screen mesh top for the tank will do fine. Place a thermometer in the tank so you can keep track of the thermometer. 75-80 F is good.

Anoles need a second light, not optional but necessary. This is their basking light. It’s placed on one side of the cage, face down on the top (because you don’t want it shining through glass or plastic either), you need that screen mesh top. This can just be a regular bulb, like a 60 watt incandescent bulb you’d have in a reading lamp. Dont’ let the bulb itself get right up against the mesh top, or it will melt it. Two inches should be around the minimum the bulb should be to the lid. The temperature you want to go for is 85-92 degrees (90 being best). Place a second thermometer inside the tank, around the height that your anole usually spends his or her time.

You probably already know about the hygrometer that’s supposed to be in the tank, and I’ll assume you have that. It’s a humidity gauge, and it should be around 40-60%. Mist the tank a few times a day, because that’s how the anole gets his or her drink--by licking the dewdrops off the leaves. Don’t rely on a water dish; most anoles won’t use it, and the few that do try it tend to only do so occasionally. Licking the water off leaves is more natural for them.
