Someone needs to start this forum!

I will start this off by saying I do not really have any anoles...except a gazillion in my yard. I love them all and feed them leftover crickets from time to time. I have rescued them if they are found in my house or garage and need a bit of help before being released back outside. This year I had two successful releases and one that died . He was caught in a spiderweb in my house and seemed to have lost the will to live no matter what I did.

Here are photos of one I rescued from drowning in my backyard...caught in a rain filled tank I left outside over night. I was very happy to have saved this one since it was one of my favorites...almost like a morph (some copper headed ones in my yard). She was kind enough to let me take some shots of her.

When I lived in Florida...we only had them green ones. That was the best part of living in Florida.

Oh the green ones are the best! They are harder to find these days since these brown ones are more aggressive (non-native species) have kind of taken over. I believe they are from Texas. You can still find the green ones from time to time higher up in the trees, especially if you are in the woods or have a very woodsy kind of yard.

Re: Re: Re: Someone needs to start this forum!

I was on the east side of florida and thats all we had was the green anoles, and them little little frogs, atleast at my sisters place. At my apartment I had the house geckos and the big big bullfrog that would scare the crap out of me coming home at 2am. So I’m thinking it goes by area.

She’s really beautiful. Is she a Cuban brown anole or some other species?

Now that I reread the post I have to say those are pretty good pictures and now I know why you dont want a digital camera. They look all kinds of professional.

Re: Re: Someone needs to start this forum!

You’re right...my bad. I don’t know why I was thinking Texas! They are Cuban. I knew they weren’t native but have pretty much overtaken all areas. They do really well on the ground and in urban areas without as much vegetation as well as plush yards or the woods. They are very hardy and aggressive! This copperheaded one is just more stunning than the photo even shows...she is practically irridescent. This morph blends in well with the rusty wood chips/bark and bricks in parts of my yard. Most of the brown anoles in my yard are just various shades of tan and brown.

Thanks for the photo compliment PE. I love photography. This girl was very considerate once I rescued and released her. She let me go get my camera and take several shots very close up. Most animals would be very scared of my camera and me at that range. The one where she is high on the wooden fence was the last series I got..she sat there and looked at me as if to say "I’ll pose for one more nice shot...goodbye and thanks!". It was a special moment.

Hmmm, maybe one of these days I’ll ask you to catch me a few, they are mighty cute!!

One of my snake-keeping friends says that all you need to do is handle a Cuban brown anole and then handle a more suitable prey item in order to make it lizard-scented and more appealing. That is the only way I could ever see keeping snakes that like to eat lizards. Ewwwww!

Re: Re: Re: Re: Someone needs to start this forum!

that’s right! You are a snake lady too....hmmmm I’d be wary about giving you any anoles! There are so many people who like to feed them to snakes or bigger lizards. I guess it’s the circle of life but come on! I would see this from time to time on the beardie forum and just wondered how someone could love a beardie but feed an anole to one???? Anoles are pretty awesome little guys! They are probably my first real exposure to lizards and are responsible for me falling in love with lizards. I still have a memory of comforting a dying green anole as a child. The cubans are a little crazier but the ones I’ve nursed back to health, or attempted to nurse back were really sweet things...wild but not aggressive toward me at all.

I see that posted every once in awhile on other forums. It is quite disturbing! I’ve also seen some horrible photos of bearded dragons and iguanas eating BIG mice or rats (fully grown). Obviously that is completely wrong for igs since they are vegetarians but it also looked like it could easily kill a beardie or iguana due to choking! Some people are sick!

I am working on a young pair of Cuban Night Anoles, not the little ones in the above photos. No disrespect intended as the little ones are very CUTE. But as for a Cool lizard the Cuban Night Anoles are 16 to 20 inches for male. These guys are fun to watch, they will eat any smaller lizard, pink to fuzzy mouse and just about any thing it can fit in its mouth. My son got his first as a hatchling and within 4 months it was completely hand tamed. He and his cousin hand feed it crickets and worms now. These are 8-10 year pet, and will give you many bite and nips but I think some in a playful almost loving manner. Well that is my 2 cents so don’t look down on big Meat eating lizards cause they are way cool if raised with care. Don’t pick on sanke people

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Someone needs to start this forum!

Hi McCheck, and welcome!

I’m certainly not picking on snake people, being one myself. And xta just likes to tease me.

However, I do kind of pick on people who think it’s cool to feed lizards to most snake species, because in my experience snakes fed primarily lizards have more parasite and calcium issues than snakes fed on rodents. Once in a great while there’s a species that gets sort of stuck on lizards but with patience and a lizard around for scenting more suitable prey you can usually convert them to a more nutritious diet.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Someone needs to start this forum!

I live in Florida and I diddn’t know that all those lizards running around were called anoles. I always just called them lizards. I also did not know that people have them as pets. I think it is so funny when people from out of state come to Fl, they are so amazed by the lizards runnin around. My girlfriends brother used to feed his beardie things from around the yard, because he was too cheap to buy cickets, and he fed it anoles a lot of times. Then one time he fed it one of those poisonous toads that killed the beardie, it was so sad.

 Anoles

Anoles change color you know, they are nicknamed the Florida Chameleon. The green anole can change from green to brown. Green is the color when they are excited, brown is their hunting color. How do I know this you ask? They were my first pet and they don’t live long, but I used to watch them for hours. Anyway there is a Bahama anole (some people call them Cuban) they are one of those pets that parents get to discourage pet ownership. Those are the brown anoles. I had one and even though I took good care of it, it died from stress and the fact that a cricket ate it from the inside out. The stress weakened all it’s systems.

I don’t have any anoles either, but when I went to Florida for a week they were everywhere! My aunt has a big screened off pool area and they always went under the screen door and got in there. They were smart enough not to go in the pool though... They just love climbing all over the screen

I think the only reason why I like Florida so much is #1 because of the lizards and #2... because of the warmth. Michigan is cold

Where I live in CA we only have Southern Alagater Lizards and Western Swifts (also known as Blue Bellies). I have one of each my Blue belly is hand tamed (Well... it will sit VARY still on me out of fright so i dont take it out much)and the Southern Alagater Lizard will only run from me and if I hold it it will bite me (and it draws blood too).
