 A star is born

I have the first hatchling that appears to be a yellow morph. Unlike the male, he has a full compliment of both yellow and brown pigmentation. His colors are: banana yellow when asleep and he can change to a normal shade of brown when he wants. I say he but I haven’t gotten a chance to check for sure. Oh yes, he hatched today,

He is in a 10-gallon by himself with lots of plants. It will probably be a couple of weeks for the pictures until he quits disappearing under the lip of the enclosure and between the thermometer and the glass wall. He should get a bit bolder once he grows a bit.

He stuck his head out long enough to grab a couple of leafhoppers and then disappeared back into the foliage. He does brown quite well and is yellow when asleep.

How is the yellow different from the green anoles? or did your green anoles produce this morph?

Green Anoles have three strata of chromatophores. Blue, Yellow, and brown from the outside in. The yellow morph is lacking the blue strata which means he can only turn yellow and brown. I found the male I have through this message board in South Carolina and went there and picked him up.
Mine has some minute quantities of blue chromatophores and a reduced brown layer as well. The result is that he has a limited color palette from pale pastel green to light tan. His resting color is yellow.

They can produce either. The color morphs are a recessive trait. Even normal-appearing offspring will carry the trait. The result is that, when they are crossed back to a yellow morph parent, up to 3/4 of the offspring will be yellow. I have no idea what the occurance rate of the yellow morph is in wild populations but the blue morph is found at the rate of 1:20,000. The problem is that, since they are so conspicuous, predators pick them off very quickly.

Following the logic, there must be an albino out there somewhere but I have never heard of a one in captivity. It would require the absence of all three pigment layers and, since they couldn’t thermoregulate, care would be a problem.
