 Male or female???

i know these types of posts are put up alot but my anole has me confused

my camera is broken so i apologise that i cannot get any pics

i read in an earlier post about large scales near the male anoles vent which i do not see

this should mean that my anole is a female but i have noticed that its dewlap is quite large and bright pink and its also the largest anole i have ever seen (13 inches)

when i tried putting some crickets into its terarium it climbed to the highest branch and started doing "push ups" and showing its dewlap and later at about 2 in the morning i heard a squeaking noise coming from the anole tank and when i turned on the light it was again displaying its dewlap as if it were trying to attract a mate

any help would be greatly appreciated

not to worry, most likely what you have is a female cuban knight anole... If it looks more like this

then its a cuban knight anole. The post you were talking about is for sexing the green anoles. It holds true for knights too, except for the dewlap. coincindentally, i happen to also have a 13 inch female cuban knight anole. Mine has a dewlap bigger than that of any green anole you will see. When they show you the dewlap, that basically means if you get any closer i’ll bite you. Its a defensive thing that makes them appear lager, as well as many other purposes. As for the squeaking, no idea about that. If it were a female, it probably wouldn’t attempt to attract a mate however.

There is another possibility. If it is truly 13" in length, it is not Anolis carolinensis (the length record for that species is 12"). It could be Anolis porcatus (Cuban Green Anole) which has become very common in South Florida. They are almost identical in appearance but A. porcatus grows a bit larger.

In addition, it is likely that they will cross-breed since they are very closely related genetically.

A male will have a pair of enlarged postanal scales just like its close relative A. carolinensis.

So if they cross breed, what will be the outcome?

A large, green Anole. Anolis porcatus and Anolis carolinensis are genetically similar enough to produce viable offspring that will look like both of their parents. Since they look the same except for size, they would look like a large green Anole. Whether the offspring are fertile, is anyone’s guess. There hasn’t been enough genetics research on the subject to determine if the offspring are sterile.
There are other closely related species that do cross breed and produce fertile offspring, though.

A morph would be a color variant. A hybrid would be A. porcatus X A. carolinensis

If it doesn’t have the two enlarged postanal scales, Corkat, then theirs is a female.

Newtdude92, it may be possible that your anole saw its own reflection and was doing a territorial display. I used to have a problem of my male anole getting stressed from seeing his own reflection too often and trying to drive it off.

Yeah. Its funny actually. When I upgraded to a 55 gallon for three of my anoles(male + 2 females) I didnt realize that one side of the cage was actually a mirror. For the entire first week, my male would bite the wall non stop.

Corkat and others, the only way to be 100% positive is to see if the postanal scales are enlarged or not. Judging just by looking at a picture (unless it’s a picture of these scales) isn’t completely accurate.

here is an easier way to tell if the sex of your anole is a male or female green and bahama anole. if the stomach is redish(not all of the stomach just the middle) it is a female. if not, your anole is a male lizard. i do hope i helped you out alot.

Kaitymay, the only sure way to determine gender is by looking at the underside of your anole, at the base of the tail:

A: Male
B: Female

Good luck!

I also should have said that what’s shown in the pictures is that a male anole has a pair of enlarged postanal scales and a female anole does not. Other factors, such as head size and dewlap, are not accurate ways to tell whether the anole is male or female, no matter what others sometimes say.
