 Beginner. Questions?

I am interested in getting a couple green anoles but I have some questions first.

1. Can they live in sweater boxes and if not, what is the smallest size enclosure for 2 of them?

2. Do they need a basking lamp or Under Tank Heaters?

3. What kind of bedding do they like or what is best for them?

4. How big do they get and what size enclosure will they need when they are fully grown?

5. What kind of accessories do they need or like?

6. What all do they eat?

7. How do you sex them and what is the dewlap for?

I greatly appreciate any help.

 Beginner. Questions?

1. they cant live in sweater boxes but a 10 gallon tank will do for life.

2.they need a basking lamp but no heaters.

3. i use cyprus tree bark it is cheap and awesome.

4. they only get about 6-7 inches so a 10 gallon tank will be perfect.

5. they like areas to climb also a water bowl in case they get thirsty.

6. the dewlap is how to sex them male if they have one and female if not.

I would also like to add that you have to get two females because males fight to the death.

good luck,
jordan

 Beginner. Questions?

1) No sweater boxes and no 10 gallon aquariums. At least a 20 gallon. You have to regulate temperatures, you need a 75 degree cool spot and a 85-90 degree basking spot.

2) Yes, you can use a white light bulb for heat but, they also need a UVB light.

3) Soil that is chemical free is best for them.

4) The male will reach 7-9 inches and the female about 6.

5) You will need running water from a waterfall or you can use a 1-2 inch deep bowl with an airstone in it to move the water. The only other thing you can do to get them to drink is to spay or mist the tank so they can drink the water droplets off of the leaves in the cage. They need to have things to climb on. They are arboreal and mostly stay up in bushes and trees up to 15-20 feet high.

6) They should not be fed mealworms. Feed them small crickets, fruit flies, some butter worms. No house flies or roaches.

7) The female can have a dewlap, though not normally as colorful as the male. The female usually has a mid-dorsal line that is white-ish. Usually only young males will have this line. The male will do head bobs, some females will also do this but usually just the males. The males also have post-anal scales under the vent and hemipenile bulge. Males usually have a larger head to body ratio than females.

 Beginner. Questions?

if you are getting 3 anoles Ide agree with a twenty gallon--anoles are exremely territorial.

any soil or retile bark has been found to cause serious repitory infections because of molding/ fumes from the bark.
the BEST substrate to use is paper towel. Its 10 times easier to replace clean and manage!!

The male used his dewlap to challage another to a duel! or to attract a mate.

they will drink stagment water from a bowl--but they need to be provided with fresh water ...daily!

keeping humidity will become your worst nightmere!

anoles are VERY tempermental and are hard to manage HEALTHILY in captivity.
their requirements are dire and any little offset.. in anything(temps/envir.) will effect their health substantially.

If you dont want the hastle I suggest getting a bearded dragon! they are the friendliest/ hardiest lizards in the world.

hope this helps!
Sincerely yours
NikkE
