Bark is not good for Anole’s small peices of it broken off could be ingested and cause impaction.

 Is it ok

if the bark is big, will it still cause impactions, or set off fumes?

Bark of any size is usually not a good choice for anole’s, mainly because with humid conditions, and the anole’s hard bite, it can break it while it snaps to feed. Over time peices, even large ones may break down and get consumed by the anole.

Finding the right substrate can be a tough task, as Lowe’s, home depot and garden centers in as far as I can drive in my state do not know what "organic potting soil " or "organic compost" is that does NOT contain Miracle grow. They carry no others, and so I am off to order some via the internet.

Some substrates are coded by the Humane society as "Risks", and have varying levels of risk. If you look on the back of some, they have some (flimsy) guides, state they are okay for Anole’s. What that really means is, it has passed a "level of known risk", not that it has no risk. Most pet shop substrates that claim they are good for Anole’s meet the requirement of a known risk of 3, 10 being the highest. In simple terms, that means 3 out of ten anole’s might get impacted using this product.

We all love our Anole’s and want them safe, so even that is too high. Expense and finding substrate can be irritating, however, if all else fails, you can make your own, and its free.

There are plenty of sites on the internet on how to make your own organic compost.
