The ’safest’ thing to use is nothing or paper towels for easier cleanup. The ’best’ in my opinion is Fluker’s Repta-Lawn. It is basically like laying a layer of sod over anything you want to use to hold the water at the bottom. Gravel is what I use to keep the Repta-Lawn from being submerged from accidentally creating too much humidity. Within a few weeks there should be some grass growing everywhere but I’m sure I’ll have to tweak it some more. There are many more different types of substrates but most of them include hidden dangers. Sterile/pesticide free soil is the most commonly used substrate but too much humidity can cause mold. Layering substrates is what you have to do to make a more natural and safer home for your anoles.

I just use paper towel--its easy to clean--and mess free--and you dont have to worry about dangers--like already mentioned---molding ext...

JUST DONT USE REPTI BARK OR ANYTHING LIKE IT---TruSt mE!!
its fumes kill--and causes very bad lung infections.

you can also use patio carpet--it looks like really short fake grass---this gives a natural look--but doesnt soak up or hold any moisture...so flooding might be a problem with that--Ide play it safe with paper towel.

sterile soil, its cheap looks great, holds hummidity which is a good thing and doesnt irritate or scratch the delicate anole skin.

do not use cage carpet or bark.

I’ve been using Bed-A-Beast. Is that supposed to be OK? With paper towels, can the anoles ever find the crickets? Sorry to reply with more questions.

if your worried about them ingesting the soil and you still want something to look good in the bottom get repticarpet they can’t swallow it and it can be washed

paper looks terrible, cage carpet and bark is abbrasive and bark can be toxic. the best stuff to use is soil, it maintains hummidity, looks the best, isnt abbrasive, is cheap. there will be no problem if the anoles ingest it they will just poop it out. what do you think they do in the wild? change the soil every few months and you will be fine.

mmmmm..not sure Skotty7

I had my leaf tail on soil--and thats why he died. Sometimes it can hold TOO MUCH moisture and molds really fast and has all types of little bugs and pests like mites that can really harm your anole---

I personally use paper towel for all my reptiles---so do breeders.
I looks fine and serves its function well. If your worried about looks more than safety and health--well then you will have troubles on the way.

and they can find crickets just fine with paper towel. You can even get paper towels with leaf pics on them!

do what you think is best.

breeders use paper towel because it is easy to clean and they have loads of lizards to look after. i recommend sterile sopil because it doesnt have these mites and stufff. always get a hydrometer to check hummidity level. also i dont keep my crickets on paper because the eat the side and bury under, though im sure they would be fine in a viv as nikke has had no probelems. there is no way that soil is going to kill a lizard, ive had mine on soil for over six years and had no problems. at the end of the day it is the overall look of the viv comparred to ease of use. the choice is your.
