 Sudden death???!!!!!!

Okay so i bought 2 green anoles last summer and 1 of them was sick and died while the female remained. So i got a new 1 not long ago(like 4-5 months ago) and he died while i left on vacation. I know it wasnt my caretaker’s fault because he was acting different before i left. At first he went to the back corner of the cage and sat there all brown 4 2 days. So i took him out thinking maybe he was dehydrated and he drank some water from the dropper. After that i put him under the heat lamp to warm back up and he got green and active again. But soon later he got brown and lethargic again. So i tried giving him more water but he just spit it out. Then my caretaker started having problems with him to and he wouldnt eat. She went to the pet store and they said maybe he is having troubles molting and cant get his mouth open so she did what they said and she said that he started to look a little better but then the next day he got bad again and died last night. Any ideas what could have gone wrong?? My female is still alive and green, healthy, and active so i dont know what the deal is but can you guys please help me figure out what could have happened??

I dont think anything was wrong with the care. I have a UVB bulb and a heat lamp that had a basking area of at least 90 degrees and cool spots. I use substrate tht keeps up humidity. He ate regularly. He was hydrated. That was the first thin i thought was wrong and he looked okay for a while but then went downhill. He always sat under his UVB light and i give them calcium powder twice a week. While my other one is doing great. Oh well i was just curious to see if anyone was able to tell me what couldve happened. Is it maybe because he ate some of his substrate every time he ate a cricket by accident??

 Sudden death???!!!!!!

that is a high possibility that he was eating substrate and became all clogged up.

 Sudden death???!!!!!!

Well I see anoles all the time, I live in florida and i just catch them in the wild. Were you feeding it enough or was it denying food? They eat constantly so if you had a bowl of food and he wasn’t eating yes thats weird. If you keep them under the heat lamp too long they can get burned so don’t try and keep them their. They don’t drink water from bowls they would probably bath instead of drink because they drink dew off of leaves in the morning and leaves only. Hope I helped you good luck!

 Sudden death???!!!!!!

I feed 2 anoles like 8 crickets every other day (at least 4 for each) and he would eat it. But near the time of his death he just wouldnt eat at all. He didnt really show much interest at all which is what lead me to think he was molting. I keep a bowl of water in there just to keep my mom happy (she really does believe that they drink from there so i just keep it in there to keep her quiet) and i mist them at least 3 times a day (in the morning, noon, and night) and usually a few more times just as i go up to my room. I put him under the heat lamp because i was hoping with water inside of him and the lamp warming him up he would start to get an appetite again. He did get green and healthy again but still didnt eat anything. He wouldnt even accept me hand feeding him. Thanks for the reply. Cheers

What was your heat light wattage? Never listen to your pet store owners they are mostly always WRONG. I’ve had my anole for a whole year they can live up to 10-13 years with the correct care(: There are numerous reasons why he could’ve died. Too cold, pesticides from his food, disease, old, and many more. Always have a basking spot in their cage. What size is the tank? Make sure you never mix green anoles and brown anoles the parasite levels may be fine for one but deadly to the other so always keep different species in seperate tanks. Could you post a picture of the tank and the anoles? It might be helpful if you don’t know how upload them on photobucket and get the URL and hit the ’Image’ button paste the link and hit ’End Image’ Hope this all helped!!

Green Anoles (A. carolinensis) and Brown Anoles (A. sagrei) usually live 5-7 years in captivity. Larger species like Knight Anoles live 10+ years. Their lifespan is considerably shorter in the wild.

 Sudden death???!!!!!!

I know all of this stuff already. I never ask my local pet store anything unless i am absolutly desperate. I know more about anoles than they could ever imagine. Like i said before. I am very educated on my anoles and used many different sites to help me gain my knowledge. Every once in a while i hit a few bumps and come here. I have a ten gallon tank and use a 50 watt heat lamp as a baskig lamp and i dont remember the wattage of my UVB. Ill figure out the picture thing later and will try my absolute hardest to get a pic up here and show you my brilliant enclosure.

It really dose sound like you are an expert but I’m still not sure on the deaths. Im sorry for your losses I think they might have been having problems before you got them. Just keep them healthy.

Your supplier doesn’t sound very promising I mean they all die after you get them it sounds like they have already been having problems like lovereptiles said.
