Sick Anole!! Help please!!!!!

I found my brown anole at a local plant store (it had just hatched on a plant my wife was buying). I’ve been learning as I go (10 months) but need help. I went on vacation and left her with my parents who left her light on 24 hrs. She seemed to do a lot of growing but developed a hump on her back which is now getting worse. She is not climbing and just sits on the bottom of the tank. I fear she is suffering, please help!! I feed her meal worms, crickets, and fruit flies. She went without dusted food while at my parents - hump possible caused by lack of vitamins?

sounds more like the light was bothering her...I switch to a red light at night, the constant light might have freaked it out a little...your best bet with odd lumps is to see the reptile vet. They might be able to perscribe a cheap solution, it could just need antibiotics...but it could also get pricey...

Sick Anole!! Help please!!!!!
It has been a several weeks since I brought her home. She may have been a little dehydrated but I spray in her tank several times a day. She was sitting at the bottom next to one of the walls of the tank yesterday and I sprayed the side of the tank and she drank some of the water that ran down the side. I put a plastic sour cream lid upside down and put water in it so she always has access to water at the bottom of the tank. I’m worried because of the bump on her back and the only vet in the area that sees lizards is a dog/cat vet who taught himself about reptiles via the internet. He gave me a bottle of vitamin D3 and A to drop on her nose once a day. I haven’t been doing it because I read if they get too much D3 it is toxic. Also I read recently about the plastic cover being removed from the uv light so I did that too.

Sick Anole!! Help please!!!!!
UPDATE!!! I went to petsmart and bought her a heat rock. When I came home she was lying on her side in the lid I put in with about 1mm of water. Thought she was dead but after I took her out she moved a little. Cleaned the tank and put her back in with heat rock. What is happening to her? I had a real plant in her tank that I just took out because I noticed some mites. Could they have been a problem?

Thanks Misty&squirt I think the mites were from a plant in the tank, I took it out. I bought some bed-a-beast but don’t want to disturb her. I fed her some water today from a needle and she drank it. My wife tried to give her some repta-aid but we’re not sure if she took it. She isn’t hiding like she used to (mind you I took the plant out but there is a rock she could go under). Every so often she lies on her side and appears dead but will look around if I come close. After a time she is on all 4s again. Not moving much and her eyes are usually closed. Thanks for you help |

Hot rocks cause burns....they often malfunction. You can get night heat with no light like a CHE bulb or radient heat panel. However, your lizard sounds like she is really bad now. I have wild anoles outside. She needs UV light and calcium without d3 (she can make her own d3 if she has these. The hump sounds like lack of calcium. Is she still eating? Keep her warm and get her basking under an unfiltered UV light (close to it) after she eats. If she is that lethargic, I hate to say it but it doesn’t sound promising. I wish you the best of luck, however. I try to rescue/rehabilitate/release weak or trapped ones from time to time and some make it and others do not. I hope you can turn this around for her.

Sick Anole!! Help please!!!!!
Thanks Xta As strange as it sounds she seems to due better when her tank isnt too hot. I leave the uv light on but find when the heat lamp is on she goes away from it. My brother is a medical doctor and thinks she is suffering kidney failure - probably from the A and D3 the vet gave me to give to her. Not sure if she is eating - hard to tell with the hump on her back. I offered fruit flies the other day, one was left but they can crawl out the top (despite the potato I leave in the tank -and replace often) so I’m not sure if she has eaten. Like I said before my wife put a little rept-a-aid on her nose and I fed her some water right after which she licked off her nose - she must have got some. At this point I’m doing all that I can - the one vet in town that sees lizards seemed to make her worse. Any more advice from anyone I would greatly appreciate. I think she mmay pull through if the hump doesn’t kill her (does anyone know if they can live with it?) because if it is kidney failure then she can survive it and if she hasn’t died yet I am hopefull. Thanks everyone and please keep the advice coming!

I doubt she can survive kidney failure but she *may* be able to survive some MBD. The anoles I looked after took well to pinhead or small crickets coated with calcium. If you can get her to eat these and put her near the UV light, this could help...plus keep her hydrated. You could try making a slurry of crickets, repcal pellets, calcium, etc and dripping that on her nose or force feeding (although force feeding is very stressful) if she will not take the crickets. If she isn’t getting any food in her, she will not survive. You could also try that jumpstart product in addition. Good luck.

yeah umm did you keep ur heat rock in ? if you did check and see when you spray the house if the rock shocks you . ( or if it has cracks in it .) if it does get rid of it .( I had a lizard that died like that i was just to stupid to catch the problem before it was to late , what happend was there was a crack in the heat rock and when i sprayed her house the rock would send electricty out and i had fake leaves in her house so off corse the electricty travlled through the leaves ) as far as the mites go that could be the problem to, so you did a good thing by taking that plant ! as far as plants go i would stick to fake ones |

Do you have the plant that your wife bought inside the tank? If you are using a store bought plant there can be harmful fertilizers and pesticides in the soil or on the leaves, any plants used inside your tank should be fertilizer/pesticide free. These can make her very sick. Good luck with your baby! I think it has been a success that you have raised her this long!

Hey! my name is jason, ive been rasen green and brown anoles for about 5 years. what your problem looks like 2 me is she is vert dehydrated, when anoles r very dehydrated they will not drink, so what i do for my anoles is get a little off grape or plum baby food , mix it with very very little vitiman dust and a tiny bit of water, then put it in a schringe or a eyedropper and hand feed her, only if she takes a drop or 2 thats a very good thing, also DO NOT unplug your heat rock , if u do her food will rot in her belly and she will die. the only way the heat rock will hurt her is if it has a crack or a hole in it, if it has one, get a new one asap, if u need anything give me a call, # is 1902, 9223064. well talk 2 u later, oh and tell her i said hi:)

You don’t ever need a heat rock. Heat from above keeps them warm and doesn’t burn their bellies. You can always put a normal rock in there to soak up the light’s heat and the lizard can lay on that if she chooses. Heat rocks should be avoided....they shouldn’t even be sold. They are unnatural and dangerous. You can also cut the cord of your heatrock (if you already have one) and use it as a regular rock.

I would like to thank you all for you help and advice. I did what I could but it wasn’t enough. She died. I just buried her. I though she was going to pull through - she drank some water for me. I wish there had been a lizard vet to take her to. If another Anole shows up at White Rose I will take it in, but I wouldn’t buy one from a pet store. These creatures belong in their natural habitat. I hope God is with you all in taking care of these amazing creatures we have the privilege of sharing the world with.
