 Taming the beast

Help! I really want to be able to handle my anole. he gets so frightened when Im around him, and i think ill give him a heart attack one of these days! If anyone could give me the rundown in full on how to tame him enough to be able to handle him, please do! He’s fun to look at but I think he would be even more fun to handle. Thanks a bunch

It’s true that the easiest way to tame an anole is to get it used to you. I have a Cuban, and she never was scared of me. That’s probably because she simply bites anything that pisses her off.

What worked for me was NOT grabbing the lizard, ever. Sliding your fingers under them and lifting slowly is far less stressful, and feels less like an attack. They’ll get used to it a lot faster. Treat them with respect and they’ll return it.

At first I handled her with thick leather gloves (in case she decided to try and swipe a finger) and once she got used to that I did it barehanded. And yeah, I talked to her the whole time. It’s important that they get used to your voice. Now I can simply reach in her tank and pick up the most aggressive anole species without her so much as flapping the throat fan. Long as you don’t make them feel like they’re under attack they’re perfectly happy to just sit around with you.

I agree with you all. The main thing is to talk calmly to them...ours love that. It’s so cute to watch them move their heads every which way in reaction to your talking to them. Our green anoles love to be rubbed on their heads, right behind their eyes and they also like it when we rub their neck. My 6 year old son has even got them to where he can turn them on their back in his palm and just place his thumb lightly on their belly and they’ll fall asleep. Then he moves his thumb and there it’ll lay...it’s so cute!

Talkin gto them definatly heps they will get used to your voice and you. I dont think they ever stop running from you but they wont be so spastic. It helps to pick them up VERY SLOWLY and genly cup them. If you move quikly and chase them around the cage they will think you are a predator. Hope I could Help!

just pic it up and let it crawl on ur arm and let it get used to u. i dont know about talkin to it but that must work for him. and be carefull if u scary it i might bite u and for such little things it hurts like hell. but if that happens dont pull ur arm away or u can brake its jaw.

 Taming the beast

I’ve had my green anole for just over a week now. The first day I let him sit in his new home, simply talking to him off and on, trying to be as non-threatening as possible. Second day, I held my hand in the cage near him, and after ~.5 hour he crawled on. I waited for a few minutes, and slowly pulled my hand out of the cage. He got a bit nervous, but calmed down as I talked to him for the next hour or so, just holding him. Third day, same thing. Fourth day, he sat on my shoulder a good five hours, after two on my hand and tummy. It actually got to the point where he refused to go in his cage. It was sooo cute - whenever I went to put him to "bed", he’d flatten out onto my hand and squeeze his eyes shut as if he were sleeping and I couldn’t get him off me! He gave me ALL sorts of dirty looks when I finally pryed him off me into the grass. But then on the fifth day, I made a mistake and got impatient after work. Tricked him onto my hand and the next thing I knew, he was burrowing in the crook of my arm, turning brown with stress. He was VERY relieved to go back in his cage, and wouldn’t look at me for two whole days. He hasn’t ventured onto me since despite multiple [patient] offers, but he’s not completely snubbing me anymore at least. I think he’ll come around.

I suspect that he’s rather attached to me, too, and I’m not being arrogant about this. I was home until the day I scared him so badly. That was the first day I had to work since getting him. Every day I’ve worked thus far, I’ve come home and he’s been brownish as if stressed. After ten minutes of talking to him, his colour returns to green. At first I thought it was because he was hungry/cold/hot/thirsty, but eventually I ruled all those things out because of changes in what I was doing. He’s still brown when I get home. I’m home with him for the next three days so hopefully I’ll earn his trust again. He’s SO cute!! I’ve got a movie clipping of him here (from today): http://www.psychomuse.com/lancelot.html (Oh, and his name is Lancelot.)
