 How fast do they grow?

My ball python is 9 months old and already it is 31". People at pet stores tell me that they are usually 2 years old at this length. So I was wondering how fast do they usually grow?

It depends on whether it’s male or female, what you feed it, how often you feed it, and genetics. Stuff like that. All I can say is, unless it’s a mostly reptile pet shop and they have a few snake specialists there, don’t believe what pet shops say. They usually just hire people that they think can handle the job. They usually don’t know what they’re selling or anything though. That’s how people end up bringing home baby burmese pythons with the advice that "they dont get much bigger than 5 feet long". Damn pet shops...

Anyway...my 3 month old baby bp(female) is currently 21 inches...probably a bit longer now since she just shed. But yeah, 31 inches is probably a normal length for your snake.

I’m not exactly sure, but I’d think no. It’s mostly the meals they’re eating that help them grow. If you feed a healthy ball python regularly, and feed them perfect sized rodents, they can grow like a weed. I know just in this first month of having my bp, she’s definitely gotten nice and thick, and put some length on. I had bought small clay pot bottoms for hides...well I thought they were small. I didn’t know how small she’d actually be when I got her. So when I first got her in her tank, I noticed she only took up maybe half of the space in a hide. Now she’s filling them up nicely. And this is just in a month.

Yes cage temperature does affect the way they grow, if your temperatures were 78 ALL of the time, you BP wouldn’t grow. I know of someone who got a 2 year old burmese python that was neglected and it was only 2 feet!

cage temp would not do that though. Likely they did not feed it. 78 isnt that low. if it were an anaconda or a brazilian rainbow it would be perfect. for a burmese it will get a RI likely. ball pythons do need to be higher but it isnt going to make it small and having it 100 all the time will not make it huge. it will only stress it out either way and maybe cause it not to eat.

 How fast do they grow?

Low temps = slow metabolism = small / no appetite = lack of growth

So in a round about why, low temps might cause a snake to grow slower... just a thought

maybe possible...with a burm i would guess the RI would cause it not to eat as well. So it may happen if the snake wont eat from one or more of those factors but other than that. If the snake eats, it will grow. If the snake is 2 ft in 2 years it was not fed or hardly ever ate. I have never seen anything like that before.

Yeah, this reminds me of the urban legend I’ve heard that a snake will only grow as big as the cage you keep it in. So if you keep it in a small tank it’ll stay small, large tank it’ll grow larger. My neighbor thinks that way. He said "wow Pelota sure has gotten big Cody! You been feeding her good?" and I say "Yeah she’s pounding down the adult mice like nothing" then he says "Ya plus you have her in a 20 gallon tank. Should be plenty of space for her to grow in. Cuz a snake only grows as big as it can depending on how big the cage is". I just ignored him and said "Yeah, so what do you feed your yearling?" and bugged him about how he only feeds his 3 foot, year old male bp one adult mouse a week. That poor snake...

But ya this reminds me of that rumor.

ya thats light feeding. I chose to ignor that myth but i was thinking of it too. a 20 gallon is not as big as africa yes the wild caughts are the same size as the captives...go figure. If this were true we would have some giant creatures out there. It makes no sense because captives often get larger than in the wild since they have a steady food source. if your animal is small there is a reason for it like a deffiency, parasites, lack of food, etc. Not 10 gallon tank keeps them small. It ust keeps the cramped and stressed.

Your’s is growing faster than what I have seen in the past. I have found that they will typically grow aboud an inch or maybe a little bit more per month.
