 Digital -vs- Dial

Great point Marg. Many of us have given this advice, but I think this may be the first time anyone has demonstrated the difference in readings with an actual photo. Great idea!

Thanx :o)

Actually I think the one in the large tank may be stuck... when I first set that tank up (with out a snake in it) the humidity was nothing (think the digi said 32%) ...another point... if it’s Stuck you will think you have the temps/humidity perfect and then wonder "Why in the world is my snake doing That?"

The Dial Police are at it again. Just say NO to dial guages!

Can’t be enforced enough, the dials are crap, and shouldn’t be sold for use with reptiles... even if they were accurate there is NO place to stick them to get an accurate reading of what is supposed to be measured. The temps inside the warm hide.

I’ve tested the digitals, and even with them I find a range. The ESU probes, tend to be off by about 3 degrees, and they take about 15-20 minutes to finish adjusting. Only mention that because I see pet stores pushing them as the alternative to dials.

I have yet to see a pet store stock the indoor/outdoors... maybe its a fear that people will catch on and start shopping for their reptile needs at the hardware store. :)

The indoor/outdoor digitals are the best. I can check my readings... open the tub and see the temps and humidity dropping immediately. Close the tub and get an accurate reading of what the temps and humidity are within a few minutes.

Shhhh never tell the pet stores about the Acu-Rites! They’ll buy em, stick the word "reptile" on it and lordy, they’ll charge triple what we happily pay Walmart now LOL. I talked with a WalMart employee recently who funny enough used to work in a major pet store. She laughed and said she kept quite a few reptiles and rarely bought anything from the pet store where she had worked. Even with her employee discount she still shopped elsewhere for her herping needs.

I used to have dial but swear by digital now, although be careful when buying digital one’s as some can be quite high standing with the sensor at the top, which gives a false base temperature in your Vivarium.

If placed Properly in your Viv it Will be accutate!
Put the Unit on the Cool side. That is the IN temperature. Run the Probe to the Warm side and put it inside/under the hide. That will be the Outside temp.

Oh believe me they are positioned correctly and I have one digital with a probe on placed on the substrate and the other digital is as low as it can go when ’properly positioned.’ There is a clear 2 degree difference. For those of us who recognise simple physics, it is obvious that the nearer a device is to a heat source, the closer will give a hotter reading as air cools as it gets further away from the heat source.

Always keep in mind that Walmart, and Lowes will beat any advertised price on the same item too.

Yes, and at Lowes and Home Depot - brand doesn’t matter - just make sure it reads indoor/outdoors temps and is digital.

We buy our digital in/out thermometers from the gardening section in Asda. £2.74 each bargain!!! We have about 20 of them.

We get so many odd looks when we’re at the checkout. Lol

I have dial guages, and yes I can vouch that they are peices of crap. It’s been a b**** to try and find a digital one though. We have a Wal-mart but all the employees have no idea what on earth I’m speaking of. Brand names? Please? I can’t even find one of these things on ebay! Auuugghhh!
