Yah, it smelles really bad!!! Luckly, I’ve only been sprayed once by a Western Terrestrial Garter Snake that I caught. It smelled bad for like 30 minuets or so, but then it got better...

????
Really??? I have been sprayed by garters plenty of times, but a ball python?
"snakes when feeling threatened will secrete a foul smelling liquid.".....does this mean ALL snakes? So a boa could too?
I have NEVER heard of this, and I have read ALOT on boids, mainly boas.

Yep Carm..ALL snakes have paired glands that can give a great little smell if need be. The big reason anacondas are almost impossible to probe is because of the size and location of these glands. This means they can hold their own with about any of the snakes as far as a musk goes. Fortunately I have never had to deal with it with a green but some young yellows can get a little excited and let you know. I think pound for pound though..garters win on the stink level and I have no idea why I still keep them. I just never handle the little devils as they have a temper like an elapid as well as the speed, and love to hit you with a musk.

Uh...ball pythons don’t "spray". Maybe he peed or you had some water on you from soaking him...but I can assure you he didn’t spray. Colubrids spray...boids don’t. So I don’t know what your bp is leaking, but it wasn’t some foul smelling spray to deter you..

Hey! If you didn’t know already, this is Cody from BP.net. I know my fair share of stuff about snakes too, but I don’t say I know everything. It’s very difficult to know everything. No matter how much you think you know, theres always something new to learn. So don’t take attitude with me please, thanks.

Anyway, I knew all snakes had musk glands. I just figured ball pythons in general don’t use them. I posted on another site asking if it’s possible, and apparently it is. So I guess you learn something new everyday. Don’t take offence to my previous post. I was just misinformed.
Oh well, I guess you sure spooked him to have him actually use his musk glands. I’ve handled my snake when in shed, and she was easy as pie. Is it a wc or cb snake? I heard wc snakes are more prone to musking.
