My first time feeding Diesel!!!!
I fed my baby ball python Diesel for the first time last night and it was the coolest and most interesting thing i have ever come across. I got an undertank heater too to help him with digesting. Just thought i would tell you that he ate like a champion!!! The mouse was inside his cage for about 15 sec. before Diesel attacked.

My first time feeding Diesel!!!! Nice. It is always a good experience when a snake eats for the first time. Next time you feed try feeding it a rat that is the same size, that way you won’t have to switch really slowly.

My first time feeding Diesel!!!!
So when my snake gets bigger i am gonna have to switch to rats. Where exactly can i get them at. The two pet stores around here only sell feeder mice. And with the live thing, can you buy them pre killed or do you kill them yourself. And i have been seeing alot on here about frozen thawed mice, what is that all about. please reply so i can learn more about this. thanky uo very much!

My first time feeding Diesel!!!! Some pet stores will sell both mice and rats. I know my small pet store in town doesn’t carry rats, but all it took was me asking for some, and he said he’s had a few asking for them so he’s already ordered some for next shipment. You can also buy them online. A good and trusty site for buying feeders is RodentPro.com. I love their site...they even have pictures so you can get a rough idea of how big the rodents are.As for your question on prekilled and frozen thawed...Yes, you can buy prekilled mice or rats. If you find a pet store that is fine with it, sometimes they will kill the rodent for you, then you take it home fresh and warm and can safely feed it to your snake. If it cools down a bit on the way there and loses its natural body heat, you can just put it under a heat lamp for a few minutes until it warms up. Having it warm is key for bp’s usually. If it’s cool, they won’t detect it well with their heat pits and may just leave it. As for frozen thawed, this is the main choice for successful snake keepers. You simply buy already killed and frozen rodents. Or you can buy a bunch of live ones, put them in a bag and give them a good whack on a wall or hard surface to kill them quickly, then freeze them in bags yourself. Then when it’s feeding day, you can take it out of the freezer, and maybe put it in the fridge so it’ll begin to thaw a bit(sorta like when someone takes out frozen steaks and puts them in the fridge all day to thaw a bit before cooking). Then when you’re ready to feed, just get a bowl of hot tap water and put the rodent(still in bag) submerged in the hot water. This will warm up the mouse a bit and make sure the middle isn’t still frozen or cold. Then just pop it under a heat lamp for a minute or two to get the outside temp of the mouse nice and warm and feed it to your snake. Since it’s not live, you may have to take the mouse by some tongs and wiggle it a bit to get the snakes attention. Usually after a bit of wiggling, they’ll attack it thinking its just any old live mouse, lol. I personally like frozen thawed because it’s safer. I dont have to worry about my ball python getting chewed up and killed, the freezing process kills any living bacteria or parasites that may have been in the mouse, it’s cheaper and easier to buy in bulk and stock up a bunch of feeders in a freezer for whenever you need them, and it’s just easier than having to kill the poor thing myself, lol. It sounds like a lot to prepare for a feed, but really it isn’t much. With just those adult mice(that seem small and not so adult at all..lol I was surprised at their actual size), you shouldn’t have to do much to thaw them. They’re so small, just a half hour in some hot water(change the water a few times to keep it hot) and it’s all thawed and warmed up. But with bigger prey like medium adult rats, you’d be better off doing the whole freezer, fridge, hot water, heat lamp process. Anything I didn’t cover? Let me know. -Cody

My first time feeding Diesel!!!! ur gonna have to switch to rats eventually. If your pet stores dont sell feeder rats try to switch your ball python to frozen thawed feeder mice as soon as possible. Then make the switch to rats. for info about getting your snake to switch from mice to rats check the FAQ at proexotics.com. Also check the how to get your snake to eat frozen/thawed prey FAQ at proexotics.com. For more specific questions, just ask.

My first time feeding Diesel!!!! Well, technically you don’t have to switch to rats. I know people who couldn’t get their snake to switch, so they feed 3-4 adult mice, or a few jumbo adult mice, per feeding. It’s just as much nutrients that you’d get with one good sized medium rat, but more hassle. I myself am gonna try to switch my bp over to rats as soon as she outgrows adult mice, which is soon. Then I’ll probably try rat pups. She should switch easily...she’s a good feeder, and has a well established feeding response, coming from a good breeder. But yeah...if you tried and tried and can’t get your snake to switch to rats, you don’t have to fret too much. If it’ll accept multiple rodents, you might have to just feed 3-4 mice a feeding. More hassle, but atleast it’ll get the nutrients it needs.

My first time feeding Diesel!!!! actually by what i’ve been told by breeders of BP’s, Blood/short tail pythons, BCI’s, Burms, and retics they say those that are started on rats and only feed on rats (except for burms and retics who are switched to rabbits) do better than those who are fed mice. So that makes me think that rats are more nutriotional. Also you would have to feed like 5+ adult mice to come close to the weight of a medium rat.

My first time feeding Diesel!!!! oops, sorry about the miscalcultions about the rats (i was thinking of large rats). It is like 5 adult mice to equal the weight of one medium rat.
