I got my first snake: A Ball Python!!!!!!!!!!! He is awesome!!! He shed last night, so should I just throw away the shed skin? (The breeder (Randy, (snakemorphs.com) who is VERY knowledgeable) told me he was going to shed really soon, and he was right!) Oh yah! I forgot to write this in the last post, but he’s 17" long, and about 1 month old! He sure is small!!!LGL

I got my first snake: A Ball Python!!!!!!!!!!! Congrats, hope everything goes well. As for what to do with the shed skin, I kept my babies first shed..much like a parent would keep a babies hair from it’s first hair cut or its first tooth. But normally, yeah you could just throw them out. Unless you want to keep it as a keepsake, it’s useless. I’m just gonna keep perfect one piece sheds from now on. I don’t want to have a whole bag of shed skins or something, lol.

I got my first snake: A Ball Python!!!!!!!!!!! Out of those choices, I say Jungle. He’s got a nice irratic random pattern. Looks like a reduced pattern you got there. Nice! Also nice pics. I liked the one overhead pic where you can see the nice irredescent sheen. I really like his long tail pattern though. How it’s all grouped together. Good luck with him.

I got my first snake: A Ball Python!!!!!!!!!!! I feed all my snakes in the cage. If you are using newspaper then the snake cannot injest the subtrate unless you shaved it. I would feed in the cage...way less of a task and worry about picking them up carefully and run the risk of regurging. If you are worried about it thinking you are going to give food every time you open the cage then open the cage plenty of times without food. I am personally not afraid of a ball python pulling me into a cage and killing me. Plus it has never been a problem for me. Pay attention and you can tell if the snake is ready for food and pick them up from behind...food will not pick them up.

I got my first snake: A Ball Python!!!!!!!!!!! lol, Yeah. Feeding inside the cage is fine. IMO the only reason to feed outside of the cage is if you have loose substrate like bark and stuff, or if your enclosure is crowded and there isn’t enough room to chow down. The whole "they’ll think everytime I go in the cage it’s feeding time and bite me" thing is false. It doesn’t make sense why a snake would do that, if you go in the cage for other stuff other than feeding. I only feed once a week. But I have my hands in the tank everyday to change the water, spot clean, and check on/handle her a bit. So why would a snake think everytime you go in the cage, its feeding time...when you only feed them once a week, and the rest is maintenance?

I got my first snake: A Ball Python!!!!!!!!!!! not to mention...you will know if the snake is ready to bite you...most animals dont in the wild because the ball python is hidden...YOU will see it. AND who cares? Its a little ball python. So aside from this dumb reason and substarte injestion...WHY not? I gave my reasons for WHY yes...less stress on the snake being picked up after a meal and less pain for you. So please enlighten me with an explaination on why not given what we have just mentioned. This is not just to lex...it is to all who still feel the need to listen to a pet store myth and follow blindly. Maybe some people in here know some educated people who say this is good...tell me why. I know many many educated people who say this is more bad than good with a ball python especially under no chance of substrate injestion(and many other snakes for that matter). Who is correct? I dont know because I have no reasons to support the other side. Sorry to sound like this but I think many of you can follow what I am saying here. Thank you.

I got my first snake: A Ball Python!!!!!!!!!!! I understand what you’re saying, and I have no answer, just what I was taught as a zookeeper and what I learned from personal experience. I don’t know of any valid technical reason that it’s not okay to feed in the tank. My baby milksnake won’t eat in the tank, she doesn’t feel safe- I feed her in a small critter keeper. Maybe when she’s older she’ll eat in the tank??? Who knows???? But you’re right- some people do and some people don’t and both sides believe they’re right. Kind of like Republicans & Democrats.

I got my first snake: A Ball Python!!!!!!!!!!! security is a separate issue. Feed with the lights off and i doubt there would be a problem. Some also like even more security in bags but I have never had to do this...that is different than do not feed in the tank. If you feed in the tank that would assume a feeding means the snake ate. With a problem feeder you need to go about solutions..scenting, bagging, teasing, braining, etc. But I know what you are saying and I know many people pass on things and some seem more like traditions. If we kept everything then green tree pythons would still have the name chondro (we use it but it is no longer their latin name). Garter snakes would be non-venomous. We would think Eunectes deschauenseii is a hybrid green x yellow. Hot rocks would be recomended. Point is...we learn new things and we adjust. We also should evaluate the reasons for doing what we do. I am ultimately all about the best for the snake and to me that includes as substate that is sanitary and easy to replace and cannot be injested. This also includes a minimal stress feeding which is dead food that has no chance of biting the snake and fed in a place I do not need to disturb the snake when it is most vulnerable. Throw in dead mouse or rat, make sure the snake takes and turn off all lights and leave the room. This is very difficult to argue. I am not saying my way is the only way but to my knowledge I see no was to improve this.

I got my first snake: A Ball Python!!!!!!!!!!! 25% het. means that 1 in 4 are het for pied. Since they all look the same you have a 25% chance of each being pied. Since nobody is going to breed all the normal males with a chance to a 100% het or a female pied those snakes are cheap because breeding those males to a female without being a for sure thing would be like a waste.

I got my first snake: A Ball Python!!!!!!!!!!! I Have been breeding snakes and a few other reptiles for many years with great success.. I have to agree with lex on this on, you should not feed your snakes in there cage I don,t care what kind of snake it is. If you have a hot that’s one thing, but just because you can feed your snake in its cage and the snake doesn’t get aggressive with you doesn’t mean its the right thing to do, and may not work for others. I always suggest you feed in a separate enclosure and so do many top breeders.

I got my first snake: A Ball Python!!!!!!!!!!! What are the main reasons to feed in another enclosure though? Just because breeders do it, doesn’t mean I should. Like I said, unless you have a particularly crowded cage, or loose substrate, feeding in the cage is fine. I’ve yet to hear, read, or experience any reason to change my mind on the subject.

I got my first snake: A Ball Python!!!!!!!!!!! Eunectes4 I’m not going to get into traits and genetics but if he bought a 25% het then that’s what it is, if he bought a 25% poss. het then there’s a chance his does not carry the gene. If he were to breed that to a het and then breed his 25% het back to one of those babies and continue doing this he would eventually get a pied. If you take a male and a female both 100% het for pied, and there were 4 eggs produced in theory 1 of the young should be pied the rest will appear normal but will be 100% for pied. Visit Peterkahlreptiles.com there is an excellent chart that will show you how this works!!

Your going to feed how you want to, I’m not going to change your mind but this is done so that every time you open the tank and stick your hand in there, your hand is not associated with dinner!! How old is your snake and how long have you been feeding him in his cage. I have a corn snake that was given to me, he was also always fed in his tank. Every time I open the top he goes nuts, shakes his tail and strikes at you when you put your hand in there. Once you get him out hes fine!!

Actually.......... a 25% het means that there is a 25% chance that it is a het for a certain trait. Statistically a 25% het will have a 1 in 4 chance (1:3 odds) of being a het. If he were to breed a 25% het to a het (1/4 chance, 1/1 chance) 1 in every 4 of those babies would be a het (over millions of trials) it could also mean that none of those would be a het. If you bred a het to a het statistically you will get 1 pied, 2 hets, and 1 normal for ever 4 neonates. But because you cannot tell the difference (visually) between a het pied and a normal they are sold as 66% possible hets (2/3 chance of being a het). To get 100% hets you need to breed something that is homozygous for that trait and breed it to a normal (a NON het) then every animal produced will be hets. You can also breed a homozygous to a heterozygous and get a 50/50 chance of getting homozygous and heterozygous.
