 New to forum..

Hello, I have wanted to get a ball python for a long time now but my wife doesn’t like snakes, she let me snake sit for a friends ball python for about three months and now she says I can get one of my own if I don’t let it out of its cage while she is in the room, I am going to start buying the supplies, how big of a cage should I get, or should I make one?

How big is the snake youa re getting? If it is a baby I would get a 10-20gal. YOu can make one eventually, for the final cage. But I wouldnt worry about makeing a cage now, since it will outgrow it. Just buy a tank with a locking secure screen lid, repticarpet, a vine, a branch, 2 hides, a water bowl big enough for it to soak in, a heat pad, a light. and thats all the basic care. Look up some good caresheets. Here is my BP and his setup, ask anymore questions if you want.

I’d say go cheaper. Glass tanks aren’t the easiest to keep heated well, and hold humidity and such. Just go to Walmart or something, and get a good sized(one that has the foot print of a 20 gal...2x1 feet) rubbermaid or sterilite container. The ones people keep clothes and storage crap in. They cost maybe 10 dollars or less. Then get a heat pad from Walmart too(as long as theres no auto shut off) for heat. And then a digital thermometer. They can be found at Walmart for 15 dollars. Called Acurite Digital thermometer. It should have two temp readings and a humidity reading. Then get two clay pot bases. The ones that are low to the ground. Not tall pots. Those will be hides.

Then you just drill holes in the sides for air, put some news paper for substrate, take a hammer and knock out a hole on the clay pot bottoms for hides, set up the digital thermometer, add a water bowl, place over heat pad, and voila. A set up that shouldn’t run you more than 40 bucks. And it’ll hold heat and humidity better. Just not aesthetically pleasing, thats all. :)

I am planning on getting a baby. If you get a baby can you put them in something that is the size for an adult, or do you need to keep the cage size with the snake size?

To answer your questions more detailed...

If you want a light source, just put the domed lamp on top of the cage. But you don’t need a light source at all. Ball pythons are nocturnal, and require no light at all really. Any light that comes through the cage by windows in the room is fine. But ya, no lighting is necessary. The only reason you should have to use a light source is if you need a heat boost in the tank if the under tank heat pad isn’t doing it all. And make sure it’s an infrared bulb or a black light, so it doesn’t disturb the snake as it tries to get some sleep.

As for your cage size question, you could just buy a big cage and have the snake grow into it. But it becomes more hassle. You’d have to load it with hides, branches, leaves, etc, to make it more small and secure. Then you’d have to pull all of that out for cleaning and put it all back. More hassle really. I’d rather just buy a small rubbermaid container maybe 2 foot by 1 foot, then upgrade as the snake grows. Cheaper, so buying multiple enclosures wouldn’t seem as bad as if you were buying glass aquariums all the time.
