that would be a good cage for once it gets to around 3.5’ in length. As a small ball python (under 2.5-3’) a 10 gallon or smaller would be best.

10 gallon or smaller? Wow, they need a bit of room to move don’t you think. I find 10 gallons fine for up to 2 feet, then move to 20 gallons. I just went the simpler route though and just got a 20 gallon tank and filled it with cool stuff so it seemed cozy. But my snakes only 4 months old and the tank already looks small for her..

a 20L has enough room for a 54" (4.5’) Snake, a 2’ snake will be scared out of its mind. less room = more security (make sure it isn’t to small)

a rule of thumb for average (ball pythons, retics, RTB’s, burms, snakes like that [NOT bloods]) thickness snakes is the length of the cage plus twice the width= length of snake.
10 gallon= 20" by 10"=40" snake
20L=30" by 12"=54" snake
40/30 breeder=36" by 18"=72" snake
3’ by 2’=7’ snake

Good if you’re considering floor space. But once you get water dish, hides, fake plants, etc...its too crowded. My snake doesn’t have much space at all. She’s 20 inches and about the thickness of an average pill bottle(only reference I could think of, lol), and she’s fine and cozy in her current 20G tank. And I just have her clay pot hides, a branch, some greenery, and a water dish. I’d think if you’re keeping a snake in a 10 gallon or smaller tank, after adding some stuff it’ll be cramped.

Scott- My snake that im getting next weekend has a sterilite that exact same size. It’ll be great, dont worry. Just make sure you have hides that it can curl up and be nice and tight in :)

okay, even IF you take away floorspace for the water dish (seeing as how it will use everything else) it won’t equate to that much. A 3" wide water dish takes up a little more than 3.5% of the total floorspace. "cramped" to you, is safe to them. You need to think of what the snake needs, a secure and safe place to live. A 20" long snake in a cage 1.5 times its length won’t do as well as it would in a cage the same length as it.

Their main source of security is their hides. So if you ask me, as long as you have small tight hides for them to hide in for security, it doesn’t matter how cramped or open the tank is. I could see if the snake had no decent hides, and had to be in the open all the time...then sure, keep it in a cramped shoe box type thing...

So, if you have a 3’ foot long cage and only 2 hides a 1.5’ snake will be secure when it goes out in the open to switch hides?

As I’ve already said before, when you have a small snake, and a large tank, fill it with a bunch of hides and greenery for security. I’m obviously not saying "hey, I have a 6x3 tank...lets keep my 14 inch ball python in there".
