 Not Sheding? Try this!!!

I had problems with sheding too, and i was told to do this ... and she shed all of her skin in one night.

Take a tupperwear container that your BP will fit into easy. cut a hole in the top, and put some water in the bottom of it. If you have moss, or something, put it in. And put that inside your bp cage. Put your BP in side of the humid box, and lay some leaves or cover over the hole. I would suggest putting somewhere in the middle of the tank, (medium heat)

and thats about it ...

T’Pol was sheding in small pieaces, and wasn;t coming off, and i tried this, and in one night, she shed everything!~

a hole large enough for the snake to get in and small enough so that light doesn’t go in easily. Some snakes will not use humid hides, and soaking is the only option (you should be soaking regularly anyway).

When cutting the hole, be sure you smooth the edges of it with a lighter to make sure the snake doesnt get a cut.

Also make sure if you are using water and not damp moss, make sure you keep the water level low enough where the snake won’t have a risk of drowning. If it is deep, put a rock or something in the bowl for him to rest his head on if he gets tired.

I used to like this idea of having a lid on a water dish and stuff, until I heard a few stories of snakes using them until one day they got disoriented and couldn’t find the hole in the top, panicked and drowned. So I’m not risking it. But if you make sure there isn’t enough water to have the snake drown in or anything, it should be fine.

The idea is that the moss is damp and warmed by the natural temp of the tank, drowning shouldn’t be an issue because their shouldn’t be enough water to be able to drown.

If you give your Royal a humidity hide as soon as you see they’re getting ready to shed (milky eyes, dull colour etc) then the snake will probably go in the hide themselves and stay there till they’ve shed. 3/4 of mine do this, the baby hasn’t figured it out yet

PS Jake - wherever did you hear this idea? It sounds like you’ve been talking to a very informed person *chuckle*

Of course not babe, knoledge is there to be shared. What’s the point of knowing something if you’re not willing to teach it to others?

Hi! I’m new here, have a bp her name is Isabella. Jake referred me here and I have a question (I would ask him but he’s at work :p), do you use moss from outside??? I’ve never seen any stores selling it, though that may just be me....:) I’m pretty sure you wouldn’t...but just incase is anyone not worried about mites?? yah I feel kinda stupid, I’m pretty sure of the answer but I always like to be safe than sorry with my baby!

You can usually find it at a pet store in the reptile section. It’s usually the ZooMed or ESU Reptile brand’s called spaghum moss. You can also find it online. Many sites offer it, check it out.

Just go to any garden/flower/plant store and look for some sphagnum moss. They usually have it way cheaper than you’d find at a pet shop. My pet shop sells a small bag(maybe enough to lightly coat the bottom of a 10 gal tank) for like 10 dollars. Or I can go to a garden center and get a nice bulk bag of it, which would fill a 10 gal tank to the top, for the same price or less.

Sound like a good deal, although I would have tons left over. But I think that garden center bags have pesticides in them since it’s for flowers, but they may carry one’s without. Either way like jake said.

If she’s hiding under the newspaper if might be too bright of a location, no hides available, or not enough heat is being produced by your heating pad and it’s trying to get closer to it for more warmth. Hopefully you have hides for her, hopefully your temp. is good. Or maybe she just likes to hide under the paper. LoL, maybe there is a part she wants to read on the bottem? LoL, kidding. Mist her or soak her yourself if she’s not using it. I would go with using a spray bottle to forced soaking. Less stressful, hope this helps!

Well i think she’s under the newspaper because she likes it, i have a heat coil thing under her hide and the heat lamp is over the newspaper and i have the humidity hide inbetween the two. She doesn’t seem to like anything i do, i tried soaking her she didnt like that, i tried making the humidity hide she didnt like that and now she is deffinatly not impressed by being sprayed. My girl is driving me CRAZY!! her humidity is at about 65-70, i cant get it any higher and it never stays at 70. her temp is at 27C (trying to raise it but its a little hard with the tank i have) I was wondering when your snake is shedding what do you have in the tank for it? Is one rock enough? or should i be out scavenging for more??

i wasn’t realy busy :P i was gameing ... didn;t see your msg ....

Ummm i have a couple rocks in my tank ... as long as you have something she can rub up against taht should be good. I think it should have some ruff sides on it ... if its just a round rock its not going to do to much.

I’d just make sure the ambient humidity in the tank is around 55-60. I’ve heard some people have success with humidity hides, but I don’t use them. I wouldn’t trust my snake to go in the hide on her own when she needs it. BP’s usually take to a particular hide/hides and would rather sit in them rather than use a humidity retreat. So I just keep my tank at 60% humidity.
