Smaller cage....hides......etc........ First-You will be going through hell to get the proper temps and humidity with that cage. what are you using for a heat source? what are the temps? what is the humidity? what kind of digital thermometer are you using?Second- That cage is HUGE!!!! most likely your ball python will be going through a lot of stress with a cage of that size (im guessing it is like a 90 or so gallon bow front, way to big for your ball python). If you wont want to give your snake a smaller more appropriately sized cage, i suggest making a cage divider (opaque) to make the cage a more adequate size. Also tape something that is opaque onto all the sides (tape is on the OUTSIDE of the aquarium) and 1/2 of the front to offer more security for your snake, if you can find transluscent contact paper use that for the front. Third-Get some real hides. The half log thing shouldn’t even be considered a hide, and that black thing is way to big. The snake should be very tightly coiled in its hide (something dark, small, and easily cleanable/disposable is best. Most of the stuff you get at the petstores are crap). I would use flower pot bases (either terra-cotta or plastic) for a snake that size use a base 6-7" in diameter. Fourth- Beautiful Snake, love the pattern.

Smaller cage....hides......etc........ i would suggest gettin some vines, that you can stick to the glass ... adds lots of cover, and looks good to. Yes your BP, might get stressed out in that cage... but in your pics it looks happy. Balled up and hiding = stress, out and about = not stressed. And it looks like its out and about looking around.

Smaller cage....hides......etc........ I’d like to say first, good job on chewing up the poor poster, Roachey. Making them feel like they can’t take care of their snake is the best way to help them, right.Yes, the cage is currently too big and probably stressful on your snake. Go to a garden center or Walmart(I found mine there) and buy a bunch of clay pot bottoms and lay them out throughout the cage to give the snake a good choice of hiding spots(knock holes in them first, like shown in the link). Also maybe you could buy some fake greenery like plastic vines and leaves you can get at pet shops, or craft shops(cheaper if you can find them) to give more coverage. Basically, crowd the cage so it looks more secure. I’m all for supplying room for your bp to roam and explore at night, but with not much coverage, it might stress out. Also for the digital thermometer, place the base unit itself on the cool side to measure cool temperatures, and the probe on the warm side under a hide to measure the warm temperatures. Your cool side should be around 80-85 and warm should be 90-95. Humidity seems a bit low. 55-60% humidity would be perfect.

you should put the base unit of the thermometer on the cool side (side without any heat source) and the probe inside the hide that is directly on/under the heat source.

Smaller cage....hides......etc........ Greetings,I have always been curious about the validity of a large enclosure stressing a snake out. If you have a huge open space and nowhere for your snake to hide then I can see it providing a lot of unwanted stress. However, if on the other hand you have a larger enclosure but plenty of hides and good husbandry, then why would your snake get terribly stressed? Afterall, they live in the wild which is... well... HUGE. Otherwise they must get terribly stressed in nature, right? That said, I’ve never tested this myself and have always kept my hatchling snakes in small enclosures until they were at least a year old. Opinions?

Larger vs. smaller......... Reasons for Larger cages: -more room for the snake -easier to provide proper temps (in some peoples opinions) -easier to make it look nicer (MUCH easier) -dont have to switch the snake to a new cage every few months -better viewing of the snake -more like the "wild" (in some peoples minds) -people like to anthropomorphize with animalsReasons for smaller cages: -Snakes are thigmatrophic -Larger cages instill the idea of the snake having many predators (for a snake, almost 100% of your predators come from above) -Smaller cages are easier to heat (in some peoples opinions) -Not as bright as a larger cage (it depends on the type of cage) -Easier to monitor your snake for health problems -Many smaller (and skittish) species of snakes tend to do better when kept in small and dark environments

Movin back in.... If by tinted you mean those cheap party bulbs, don’t use them. Their glass is just painted with the color, and after a while it wears off. This is no good cuz usually people buy the red bulbs since bp’s cant see the red spectrum so it won’t bother them, but when it’s not true red, and it fades, it’ll be seen by them. If you must use lamps(I try to avoid them...hard to keep humidity up with them drying the tank out so fast), get an infrared bulb...the ones specifically made for reptiles. And I myself don’t run any lamps at all, since I try to keep the cage heated by just a heat pad and hate how the lamps dry the tank out. But people do keep the lamps on all day and night. That’s when the infrared bulb becomes useful. Cuz it lights up the cage nicely for us to see them, but they can’t see the light.

Do you know everything? I highly doubt that. The thing that erks me is that you said "everyone", not "some" or, "most" which still would have been wrong ... but everyone, other then one person, knows nothing ... hmmm can you give some examples of everyone not knowing what they are talking about? ... didn’t think so ...

Np=no post I can’t speak for her. But I’m sure she’s referring to boababe and roachey. Both for their own reasons. Such as Roachey trying to push his ways of keeping snakes on everyone. And Boababe trying to give good advice that might not be best for the snakes. Stuff that works for one person might not work for everyone else. That’s why when I give info I usually look at my experiences, the experiences of others, and what care sheets and sites have taught me over time. Then I put in whatever seems to work best. I have no problems with anyone here personally. So please love me.

Np=no post Thanks alot Pelota. Maybe I’ll try and give better advice, like Tegugirl0, she gave some wonderful advice. Saying its good to keep a snake and lizard in the same cage. I’ll try and be nore like her. You know what!? I had no problems wiht anyone here either, until you just now said that. I may be young, but that has nothign to do with my intelegence. Could you please tell me where I gave someone false advice? I am not saying everything I say is right, but you make it sound like i dont know what I am talking about, and I just say random things that are not good for snaeks. I always look at my answers to, from caresheets, other peoples, and my own experience. I have had no problems with any of my snakes, and they are doing very well. By the way, that really hurt my feelings. No one else has ever told me I don’t know what im talking about, and that I give advice thats not good for snakes.

Np=no post K, I understand you might not like how some people might think "oh she’s a kid don’t listen to her". But I never mentioned or thought anything like that. To me, age doesn’t matter. As long as the person knows what they’re talking about, that’s cool. :)And as for telling you specifically what advice you’ve given that might be wrong...since I can’t(or don’t know how to) check back on your previous posts, I can’t find them. Nor can I remember them off the top of my head. One thing recent that I remember is on bp.net when you were telling hockeymom that you’re sure her boa is a peruvian bcc, although it clearly looks like an everyday columbian bci. You said it seemed lighter or something. It’s probably lighter and more vibrant because it’s still a baby. That, and boa’s can change their colors a bit during the day. Sometimes they can be light, other times dark. Like mood rings.

Np=no post I didn’t say I am sure it was a peruvian, I said "that definatly doesn’t look like a columbian" I know they change colors, mine does all the time, but I had gotten my b.c. manual out, and went to the photo section, and the one hers looked most like were peruvian, and suriname.
