Mites in the pits (IM SO PISSED)
im so irritated with these feaking mites. i cleaned out the cage in its entirety (what a pain in the that was) and washed him with "snake oil" and every couple times i hold him i find a mite or two when i rub under his head or on his neck. ive heard that mites hide in the heat pits so i was wondering if there is a way to clean out his heat pits. will the oil do damage to him?? PLEASE HELP ME IM SO PISSED OFF!!!!!!

Mites in the pits (IM SO PISSED) use prevent a mite in the cage and give the snake a long bath and a tub deep enough to soak its entire body in.

Mites in the pits (IM SO PISSED) you should cehck this out http://www.icomm.ca/dragon/mitetick.htm i posted in other thread, i remeber reading that you can soak a snake in mineral oil, just don’t get it in the eyes. This will drown and kill, the mites/ticks, and their eggs. Read that link, and double check what i said, in case i am remebering wrong. http://www.icomm.ca/dragon/mitetick.htm = click here

Mites in the pits (IM SO PISSED) There is about 101 different ways people will say to get rid of mites. Some good, some bad. I can only tell you how I have delt with them. Go to a pet store or online and get a mite spray meant for reptiles (several brands out there)(Read the directions on how to use some may be different). You should be able to use the spray on the reptile and cage(after a very, very good cleaning). I try to avoid the eyes and mouth. If you have a clean temporary cage(A rubbermaid works great during this time) you can use for the reptile for 2-3 weeks it would help. Clean their cage 2-3 times a week, use the spray in the cage after each cleaning. If you have them in a temporary cage still spray their normal cage 2-3 times a week with spray after you have cleaned it. You want to kill any eggs left in there. Clean and put away anything you do not have to have in the cage. Should be mainly hides(plastic/no pores),water bowl, and something for them to rub on if shedding. Use newspaper for the flooring. Clean the items you took out with bleach water, I use about a 1-4 mix, rinse and let every thing air dry. Make sure there are no fumes. I do this for 2-3 weeks. I use the spray on the reptile also when I clean their cage. You have to kill the mites and their eggs, which is the hardest to do. I hope this helps. Again there are 101 ways this is what works for me.

Mites in the pits (IM SO PISSED) Mite live about 15-20 days, from egg to adult at 86F. Egg 28 hours 98 hours Larva (nonfeeding) 18 hours 47 hours Protonymph (feeding) 3 days 14 days Deuteronymph (nonfeeding) 13 hours 26 hours Adult (feeding) 10 days 32 days Mites will come off with the skin in a shed. Remove the skin right away, clean and spray cage and snake. Some of the sprays say they are safe around the face and eyes.

Mites in the pits (IM SO PISSED) Sounds good so far. Remember to keep things simple though. Use newspaper or paper towel for substrate so it’s easier to keep an eye out for mites. I’d just have paper substrate, the hides, and a water dish. I’d keep it like that for a week or two until I’m sure there’s no more mites.

Mites in the pits (IM SO PISSED) I was the one that stated I put my snake in mineral oil...I soak them for roughly thirty minutes and using a gentle sponge wipe off the mites present..... drain the tub then again rerinse..... once done liberally apply the mineral (and baby oil works just as well) to the snakes scales..... It can also be recalled that I made it a point that Bark harbors the mites..... most stores sell repti bark but it isnt treated for the insect infestation. the eggs lay dormant in the wood and when heat and a little moisture is applied they hatch causing discomfort for reptiles and their owners.... for larger snakes calci sand works some even use newspaper it all depends on the individual... astro turf works just as well but can be a pain to cleanse once the snake does its buisness.... but in my opinion almost ANYTHING is better then reptibark..bad bad BAD stuff

Mites in the pits (IM SO PISSED) Actually I disagree. Reptibark is good. And it may have been untreated in the past, but now it states on the bag that it has been treated for insects and stuff. That, and before using anything I always bake it in the oven to kill anything present, so there’s nothing in my bark to worry about. Reptibark is nice looking, absorbent, easy to clean, and fairly inexpensive. Just make sure you bake it in the oven for a while to be sure and kill anything that may be in it. And I wouldn’t use sand for bp’s. It’s hard to keep humidity up, and can get caught in their vents/under their scales and cause irritation. Best thing to use is probably newspaper, astroturf, reptibark, and maybe wood chips(not cedar or pine).
