 New Ball Python!

I thought I would just post a pic of my new bp Maximus. He/She is 27inches long and I am not sure how many months. And I have a question, what is the preferred lighting for a ball python, Thanks!

No lighting is the best. They are nocturnal.

Some people say to leave a white light on for half of the day for their natural light cycle. There’s a whole technological explanation that explains why every living thing needs the light cylce. I don’t know, look it up if you want to know more. I have a white light on for 12 hours with a black light. And I have the black light on a night and day. I try not to run the black light 24/7, so its off for about 6 hours of the day.

Heat pads are fine if it is under a glass aquarium. I use to have one under a plastic container, and the container started to get that burning plastic smell. I had the container 3-4 inchs above the heat pad too, with the heat pad on low. Thats why you should use glass if your going to heat pad route. Lights work fine also, just mist once a day or every other day if not in shed. DONT USE HUMAN HEATPADS IN HOMEMADE CAGES!! It could get a short and fry your snake.

I stick with lights, they work the best and you dont have to worry about anything. Just replace when the burn out (like once a year). Its cheap to replace too, because everyone has a white light lying around the house. You just have to go out and spend 3-5 dollars on a black one.

I provide a day night cycle...use a low watt flourescent light. This may provide a little extra heat in the day but nothing significant..you heat pad is your main source. I would trash the reptibark as well...newspaper or carpet.

If you get light in your window, i that should be enough for a day/night cycle. And as for a heating pad, i have mine inside my tank, because the bottom is wood. But what i did was go and buy a piece of glass to fit the heating pad. The glass is the same thickness as a tank, I put a thermometer on the glass, and put a dile on the cord to the pad ... so i can turn the head up and down.

Just another thought, if you can’t put it under the tank

... glass is realy cheep!~ i paid like $3, or around that ...

Also, this way, if you change tanks, the heating pad isn’t stuck to the bottom of your tank ...

Wow, I don’t agree with the person saying not to use human heat pads. Believe me, it’s perfectly fine to use a heat pad all the time, whether its a human pad, or reptile pad. I mean, if the human heat pads were so easy to short out, they would be taken off the market with lawsuits and injuries surfacing. I have my human heat pad on all the time and yet to have any problems. Also, if you have a heat pad that’s melting plastic, it’s too hot to safely heat any cage to begin with...

Also, ball pythons do not require any day/night cycle. They’re nocturnal. As for the argument that all living creatures require a day/night cycle, if that’s so, then any light that comes into the snake room during the day is sufficient to let the snake know it’s daytime. My snake couldn’t give a damn though, since during the day shes too busy curled up sleeping in her hide.

With the lights instead of the heat pads, you can go to any carnival supply place or party supply place and get colored light bulbes extremely cheap...i bought several colors at about .50 per

Uhh....those are no good though. The idea of using colored bulbs is so the snake doesn’t get bothered by them. ie. buying an infrared bulb so the snake can’t see the light, but it still provides heat. However, if you use the "party bulbs", those are just painted with color, so after some use, the color wears off, and basically becomes useless since the snake will then be able to see the light and be stressed out.

I just don’t like using lights in general when trying to heat snakes enclosures...it’s much more difficult, with keeping the temperatures steady, humidity up, and not having belly heat. Under tank heat all the way!
