 Frozen Mice mess!

So i met this terrible hideous lady in the pet shop i went to, not the usual pet store i got to.
I bought Verruca Fuzzies this time, thinking the first time i fed her she took in in Real quick, like 4 minutes! but i thought maybe she was still hungry, so i went for a bigger size of Prey, froen Fuzzies.

So i unthawed it in a plastic sandwhich bag and hot water.
I stick my tongs into the bag to get it and it GUSHED!
like the mices insides were pouring out.
GROSS, right? smelled nasty too.
i put it in her enclosure, thinkning she’d eat it right up, but sh hasnt come out of her hide.
i KNOW she can smell this hideous thing, but is it safe for her to eat?
the last one i gave her never gushed.... :S
keep in mind, this is the ssecond time ive ever fed her
and the First time in her own enclosure.

You either thawed the mouse in water that was too hot. Thawing in hot water to accelerate the process makes the skin more fragile and often lead to exploding preys!

Or the mouse has be thawed before and froze again.

My recommendation next time thaw at room temp (this will also allow you to entice your BP to eat by pre-scenting the room) and warm up the mouse with a hair dryer.

Also why are you feeding fuzzies?

Plus, they were out of hoppers anyway.

is this ok? or should i take that stinky thing out of her enclosure and
feed her a hopper tomorrow?
I feed her on wednesdays

Get the pinky out and do not offer food again before another 5 days and feed the appropriate size prey.

Fuzzies are WAY TOO SMALL, hatchling BP are generally started on hoppers and quickly move to adult mice?

What is the weight of your BP?

J-Me...

Your Ball Python when it was a week old...could have eaten a large hopper!

By now...You should not be offering your snake (Verruca) ANYTHING SMALLER than a small ADULT MOUSE!!!

No Hoppers!!!

No Fuzzies!!!

==============================

Verruca...If you can read this...

ESCAPE!!!

Your owner is going to kill you from neglect if you don’t escape!!!

Holy crap.. The people at my local petsmart were trying to tell me that I should be feeding large to jumbo rats! Underfeeding is just the other extreme.

*Try an adult mouse* ; )

whew... now that everyone else has covered everything...

What does the "hideous lady" have to do with anything? That’s so rude, I can’t STAND people who are repulsed by anyone that doesn’t look perfect.

Before this looks like drama kicking in, I don;t intend it to be, it is just an extreme pet peeve of mine.

This site, what i THOUGHT, was to help others out,
NOT Call them names.

One of you guys said this this was all a learning experience.

Comments like calling other STUPID, is not called for.
If you’re going yo call someone down go to another forum.

I’ve read this thread 3 times...and nobody called you "Stupid"!

Maybe you felt that way?!?!

But nobody called you "Stupid" at all.

Just feed your snake a properly-sized mouse and he’ll be much better for it.

And...As I have suggested several times before...

Buy the $10 Book...and then READ the $10 Book!!!

Let see if this will help you identify the prey you are offering

Hour hold pinkies

1 Day old pinkies

10 days old Fuzzies

15 days old hopper

21 days old weaned mice aka small mice

The size above that are adult mice

What is the weight of your BP?

Wow....I may be in the minority here...I dunno...but I am going to take J Me’s side. ScyllaCharybdis she prolly felt that way because of reading the way you responded to her/him (sorry j me if you’re a guy or a girl...I dunno). I dont pretend to know everything about snakes...and I too would feel a little upset at the way you replied to J me’s post. A simple "J me, feed bigger prey" woulda worked instead of going bonkers on her

On the flip side J me....feed bigger prey ;-). The almost cliche "just a tad bigger than the biggest part of your snakes body" fits well here.

Try feeding a small adult mice first and than you should have no problem moving to a large adult mouse.

Just remember feed a prey slightly smaller than the girth size once a week, or even once every 5 days since he is so young!

This happened to me a few times its very smelly, I was feeding outside her tub then and I left the feeding tub outside for like a week lol. Anyway just thaw it at room temp or just water that you can comfortably put your hand in so you know if wont mess up the mouse. It is not nice to have a burst mouse but at least it was in a bag, when I did it once it was in one of my mums fancy bowls lmao and I had to bin it coz of all the guts, my mum says she still loves me but I’m not too sure. Just take the people aboves advice and don’t be such a wuss this isn’t a forum for overly sensitive people, you will get good, clear advice so just don’t take anything personally.

Flip side meaning I was done discussing people being fairly rude to J~Me, and moving on. Its a saying...

There was a reaosn to take sides as she was getting verbally mugged for a mistake. At least she was feeding the snake and not starving it, or giving XXL rats....

Didnt think it was a big deal...but again, I’m not an expert, unlike some other people here....apparently

Just a few things (For everyone) to keep in mind when it comes to caring for your snakes...and life in general...

"Chance favors the prepared mind!"

"Prior Planning Prevents Piss-Poor Performance!"

In other words...READ about how to properly care for something BEFORE you get it! This would also hold true some day when you grow up and think about having KIDS!

"You can only make a fatal mistake ONCE!"

"Stupidity is completely unforgiving!"

"Assumption is the Mother of all Foul-ups!!!"

I agree with Kamandag!

And I will add...

Quote:

So in other words know absolutely EVERYTHING there is to know, and make sure you do...cuz once you get a pet you should know everything...and never learn anything. Got ya

No...I’m just saying learn something...at least the basics!

Don’t try being combative on a very simple principle here. Before you buy a "Ball Python" for example...You should already know...

a) How big of an enclosure they need as babies, yearlings and adults.

b) What their Temps and Humidity need to be and what you need to buy in order to maintain those.

c) That they should have 2 identical hides.

d) What food they should be eating (including the proper SIZE) and how often you should feed them.

These are the 4 absolute basics!!

If you come on this forum (and already own a Ball Python) as ask these basic questions...You are showing everyone exactly how...

1) Stupid and/or Ignorant you are.

OR

2) Uncaring you are about the animal’s well being.

Now coming on here and asking how to "tweak" or "improve" your basic set-up or care is not only normal...but expected and welcome!

Quote:

"Inexperience Doen’t Mean Less Intelligence"

But in your case...it might!?! (And you spelled Don’t...OR...Doesn’t incorrectly!! Real smart!)

If you are "inexperienced" and "intelligent"...Then you should have had enough brain cells to pick up a book and read it before you bought the snake!

Since you didn’t...Now we can only figure you for the "inexperienced" part!

Please just learn from this and stop trying to go into a "Battle of Wits" with me! You’re both unarmed and it just wouldn’t be a fair fight!

Unarmed? Fair fight? Not really worried about that here. J~Me does have some books BTW and everyones opinion on size is different. from just a bit smaller than the snakes girth, to just a bit bigger. Me, personally, could care less on a "battle of wits" with you. I was speaking from a stand point that it kinda sucks for new "inexperienced" owners to post a question about a blown up mouse, and to be completely insulted by the size she chose...because you get off on knowing absolutely everything there is to know about reptiles. That, or you just enjoy being a jerk. Either way....good day.

And I was speaking from a stand point that it definitely sucks that someone would purchase an animal (which requires a lot of responsibility) and not know a thing about how to properly care for it!

And I would like to point out that nobody completely insulted her...Although we still could.

Quote:

I never claimed that and I’ll be the first to tell you that I don’t.

But I will tell you that if I was going to buy an animal that I was not familiar with...I would be responsible enough to at least learn THE BASIC CARE of that animal.

Anything less IS stupid and irresponsible!
