Is there such a thing as too big?

I know I’m asking alot of questions... but I think it’s better to hear from people who have had experience....

My mom is talking about getting a new tank, 50 gallon and up... but to me that just seems too big? The biggest i read in the care guides is 30 gallon and thats for when they get older?

But is it bad to have a big tank. Will he feel uncomfortable with so much space or would it be alright?

30 gallon tanks are the ABSOLUTE MAXIMUM for an ADULT Ball Python. Too much space can cause a lot of stress on them, which can lead to them going off feed! they are very secretive snakes and spend their lives hiding in tight areas. tanks like that will make them feel like they are out in the open.

People here will tell you that is way to large. Trust me i asked everything there is to ask almost...

I still ended up getting a $99 40 gal for my 18 month old bp. She seems comfortable & eats every time i offer live food in the tank.

I keep the tank very busy, alot of things to climb on since she is a climber. 2 identical cave hides, secured slate rock hides & many leaves with a couple wooden dowel rods to.

Realistically she only needs HALF of the 40 gal i have for her. But i have what i have & it is what it is.

Okay.. thanks alot you guys. I’m glad people here are so willing to help.

So I guess it just depends on the snake. But I guess a 30-40 is the biggest I should go? I’d just like to get something big now, and then not have to worry about changing to a new one later. And this tank, with all the things i have in it is just too small...
I have the two water dishes, a log hide, a piece of vine that he usually sleeps under (don’t know how the hell he fits lol) and theres no more room.

i got yelled at here for using a log hide like u have.

if you upgrade your tank i would ditch the log hide & replace it with 2 inexpensive flower pot hides like this one i made for my prior tank

they are about $3.50 at walmart...easy to cut with scissors too...

i switched to the ceramic caves since then for personnal preference but those flower pot dealies worked out well.

2 matching hides on each side, & my bp would travel to one during the night, & the other during the day like clockwork.

p.s. there is an opening i cut in the front of each hide, she just likes to dig & may of blocked that view with substrate. its the only pic i had of those hides.

p.s.s. i am not exactly sure the reason why the log hides are bad, i just know everyone said they suck & that i was to lose them & replace it with the flowerpot hides...i wasnt inna position to ask why i just did what they said...lol

oh thanks... well actually... I’ve only seen him use the log hide twice... and i think the one time it was because i was spraying and it got to him while he was under his vine, so he ran to the other one lol.

but yeah... His tank is very small with the two water dishes, and the two hides (if you count the vine as a hide).. its very cramped...

You don’t really need two water dishes...unless your humidity is insanely low...but then why not just use one larger water dish? But then why not just forget the whole humidity issue altogether and use a tub? But that’s another issue. Anyway, the reason the log hide is less than ideal is because it is too open, bp’s need snug hides, ones that touch their body on all sides, so that they feel safe and secure. That’s probably why your guy is hiding under the vine, because he can squeeze in there tightly. It doesn’t really matter what you use for a hide as long as it’s snug, I’ve used the flowerpot hides, cave hides, and other expensive pet store hides, and I’ve found that my bp’s always favored the cheap little plastic hides I made from various food dishes.

I just made him a little hide out of a plastic bowl. But I’ve seen him in the log hide enough and he looked pretty squished in there... but comfortable enough. I dunno... but I think the homemade fits alot better... But yes... the problem is my tank’s humidity is insanely low. And I dunno why... I mean... it seems easy enough for you guys. So far I’m trying that moss dish idea, moving the water dish over the under heater, and a piece of glass half covering it and it’s only 30%

Unless this takes a day or two to build up the humidity? There’s still some things I can try but I’m getting really worried.

This is his tank. I just took the log out (much more roomy now) and that black hide i had in the back corner under the vine where he usually lays. But he only stayed in there for a bit and then crawled back into his corner behind it. So i decided to move that over to the cool side. I guess he just likes his vine, though it’s odd cuz it seems rather open to me.

And there’s Edward squished under his vine.

Edward looks very cool & very similiar to mine

its a good tank setup, especially with that black bowl

is that a heat lamp on the screen over the vine?

Yes... i some times prop it up on rocks to raise or lower the temperature. But if you’re worried that he’s gonna burn himself, I’ve already checked for that. The rim of the lamp is cool enough and the bulb is up plenty high so he cou;dn’t burn is tongue or anything.

And you think so? I was thinking I should find another black bowl to put by his vine since they say to use identical ones. But he usually just likes that spot. I dunno if he’d even use it.

The lamp would be what is killing the humidity. Not saying to get rid of it, I need one myself to maintain the right temperatures. I basically only left a tiny enough space not covered with foil to accomodate the lamp but I still need to mist several times a day to maintain the humidity.

Hmmm... Well i was thinking. What if i put a piece of glass under the lamp... would that help you think? Maybe I’ll try it and see what happens. My mom said she’ll look for another piece of glass so I’ll have it mostly covered and then try what one person did.

Is there such a thing as too big?

i feel the lamp is sucking out all the humidity, i had two at one time elevated over my tank.

Instead i got a under tank heating pad for the cold side as well as the hot side like this pic

and two repti-temp rheostats for manual heat control. but i dont have a pic of those yet.

its basically a dial i can turn from low-high to adjust the heat pad on each side.

i never seen them mentioned in here, but i never brought it up before either.

i have my lamps nearby, but i have not used them since i got both under tank pads as pictured above.

repti-temp rheostats are made by zoo-med. i was very desperate, and it is alot easier to maintain the temps of 80-84 cold side & 90-94 hot side by just keeping the dials at there seperate levels with no heat lamp.

so yeah 2 heat pads under the tank instead of the heat lamp sucking the humidity solved the problem for me. mine was at 29-30% also, so hang in there....i kno it can stress a person out tweaking & tweaking

but now that its done its done, & i can go to work and come home from work & the temps are exactly what they should be ...humidity included at 55% average

Oh thanks so much. Here i was thinking that I have to go out now and get a plastic tub, and i wasn’t sure how to go about heating those, and all these different senerios... but that sounds alot easier and better for my situation. Can i still get a termostat for the heating pad i have now... or do i have to get one that already has one included?

Yes you can use the one you already have, all you do is plug it into the repti-temp rheostat & plug that into your wall outlet.

They come with an adapter built on the unit so you can use it for anything even lamps & other devices up to 150 watts. Work great for my under tank heat pads.

You`ll need 2 of the repti-temp rheostats for manual heat control, & one more under tank heating pad for the cold side. one for each side, & just tape a label on each cord so u kno which side is "Hot" & which side is "Cold"

Then just turn the dial, set it & forget it.

Atleast those are pretty cheep. Becuase I’m already in debt to my mom. I feel so bad... I didn’t know it was going to be this complicated. But I guess I’ve learned my lesson.

Insulated box with heat packs if needed (snake must be placed in a snake bag or pillow case first)

Quote:

Depending on the size of your collection, either have some heat packs available or have a generator.

Oh okay... thanks. I was thinking that if worse came to worse I have heating pads that you put on for sore muscles and stuff. But then I ws thinking of how I could make it that he didn’t burn himself on them since they get pretty hot.

I owe you guys alot for putting up with all my questions. ^ ^
