I have a new female BP and she has a respiratory infection but I can’t get into a vet for 2wks is there anything I can do until then? I have the tank temp up to 84, and humidity at 45. now what. Thank you for any info ahead of time.

You need to find another vet, 2 weeks is not acceptable in the mean time bump your temps 4 degrees on each side and BUMP your humidity (do not lower it)

The humidity being 45% is acceptable inder normal everyday conditions...But what do you mean that you "have the tank temp up to 84"???

80 - 84 degrees should be the cool-side temp!!!

The warm-side should be 90 - 94 degrees.

And with a BP having a RI...You should bump the temps up to 87 cool and 97 warm.

I was reading more about the respiratory infection. And I have heard my snake make a little noise. But it’s not all the time. Once in a blue moon. Does that mean he might be getting it too?

Go to this site: http://www.reptilegeeks.com/bigslickserpents

And then click on "View All My Videos" on the right.

Then click on the video "BP with RI"

Does it sound anything like that?

I dunno why he would though. Besides the first day or two i had the heat about right every day... and it hasn’t been too damp... And even if he got it within though first days... its been a month now. I would have have more of a sign wouldn’t I? And he’s still feeding fine.

Ugh god.. now I’m panicing about more things ><

Oh o.o no it doesn’t sound anything like that. I mean... i dunno... do snakes normally make any noises at all? It’s just... a tiny little... kinda click noise i guess. And like i said i only hear it once in a while.

Depending on the stage you snake might not make the same sound, however snakes do not make sounds so the only way to know what is going on is to take your BP to an herp vet, the sooner the better!

Just to be safe...I would schedule an appointment with a "Snake Knowledgable" Vet.

You should get him/her checked out every so often anyway.

Well pet ownership is not cheap, you own a pet you MUST provide for them, if you can’t than you need to re-think about your ownership.

Oh no.. I’ll deffiantly do it. I’m not gonna let him sit there and suffer.

I feel bad. Like one of those stupid people who buy a pet before they know anything about it. I swore I’d never do that. I’ve always wanted a snake but I just didn’t think I’d ever be able to get one in a million years. And then we went in the petstore and i was looking at them and my mom finally cracked. Out of now where. And it was one of those... do it now before she changes her mind things.

I still think I’m doing alright.... just I’ll make sure I get him an appointment asap and keep my eye on him. I’ve had him out for an hour now and I haven’t heard anything so... Maybe I’m just being paraniod, but I’ll still get him a check up.

I am biting my tongue here.

But if you have had improper husbandry, then yes, you need to correct that and get your snake taken care of. The temps and humidity is sufficient to have caused the RI.

And not seeing your set up and knowing nothing about your husbandry and handling processes... if you have one sick snake, then yes, chances are you have two sick snakes.

Do you follow universal precautions and safe handling? If not...

Again, I am making an assumption here, but if your husbandry is off and you did not seem aware of it, then there is a good chance you are not following stringent quarantine, handling, and sterilization processes either.

RIs, can be fatal and are contagious.

The snake that is sick, needs to be in strict quarantine. And if the other snake is making "noises"... then you need to get them both into the vet and have a culture done.

I had a snake with a chronic RI (from 3 years of previous husbandry), he was in quarantine for a year, and eventually died due to organ failure, etc. Leaving this snake untreated can have long term health effects that will compromise his/her immune system even after treatment.

You need to deal with this.

Bruce and Deborah...

It is appearent to me that this person (Midoripickle) not only has little clue as to what they’re doing...but don’t really care too much about their animal either.

Based on the info in this thread and a few other thread that Midoripickle is involved in I can plainly see this.

Midoripickle was offered 1 on 1 help from me over the phone and has yet to reply in any way...

And Midoripickle has not answered any of the questions that were asked of him.

Sounds pretty unwilling to help his/her snake!?!

What? What are you talking about? When did offer me help on the phone? Unless it was a post I didn’t see.... I would have gladly took that offer. And what questions are you talking about? I’m answering as many as I can...

And I don’t care what you say but I care very, VERY much about my snake. If I didn’t would I be on here, asking so many questions so I can get as much information and tips as I can? I know I’ve made a few mistakes but I’m not completely stupid here...

I’ve responded to your questions... to yours about the video with the sounds... and then the others saying that i should take him in to the vet. And I said I’m probably being paraniod but I’d still set up an appointment. And if there’s any i didn’t I probably figured you were talking to the other person. And I’ve been checking my messages and I don’t see anything in there...

You may to avoid that in the future. When someone starts a thread about something as serious as an RI, they are looking for advice as much as you are.

You should repost your querie as a unique thread and move out of this one.

ScyllaCharybdis i am a new member just tonight so i am unable to reply to the message center post you sent me. I am a new snake owner so I am not a super knowledgeable owner, i know what i know from my daughter and research. yes I did increase the temp in the tank as suggested.
Just as a little corrective criticism about replies to others >> 1.No Rude Behavior, Cursing, Flaming, Naming Calling, or Racial/Religious/Political Comments. >> I myself (being new here) feel the replies to modipickle or something like that were rude and hostile to a point NOT SAYING IT WAS FROM YOU because i honestly didn’t remember that part, just that he/she was being attacked because they didn’t reply right away and that they were not 100% knowledgeable. Just all I am trying to say here is "try" to be more sensitive to how you reply to people.
Thank you and I apologize if I offended or upset anyone by this response. I can take any corrective criticism as long as its corrective (you offer a suggestion/better way of doing what I did wrong).

No "Candy" does not wheeze at all. She breathes hard and long, breathes with her mouth open. It appears that she may also have a poop blockage. I gave her a warm bath tonight to try to help with that also.

But I was wondering why you (or so I thought it was you) weren’t replying to my message but had all the time in the world to continue posting replies in this thread and other threads.

Again...Just a little Screen-Name confusion!

How about a few of us just stop jumping to a lot of assumptions and show a little more patience. I’ve seen newbs jumped on because they didn’t respond to something in a thread in a few hours, let’s not do the same when someone doesn’t jump up and applaud when we offer to help.
