 OT- new addition

This is off topic but I thought I would share in this forum considering not as many people respond on the red tail forum. I just got a columbian RTB today. He should be arriving Wednesday. I used to have my bp in a 55 gal. But that was too big and unnessacary so I moved her to a 40 quart tub and I am going to put the new red tail in the 55.

Don’t forget to mention something about the Red Tailed’s poop Marg, I’m sure you can think of something to say about it

Actually since it’s a boa I’d go with strict QT for six months minimum but then I’m a freak about that stuff. To this day our 3 boa’s and the milksnake live permanently in our livingroom while the ball pythons have their own seperate room behind a closed door. They are very rarely in contact with each other even though we had most of them for years.

That’s a very lovely snake but 55 gallons is awfully big for a small baby boa. I’d go with a nice smaller enclosure for now and just save the 55 for when it’s grown a good bit.

Thanks for all the comments. I am going to put the boa in quarentine for 6 months by putting my bp in my room while the boa is in my basement. If I put a divider halfway in the cage would that be good?

Pfft - dunno why I said 90 days... meant 6 months!

Good to hear you will be quarantining... so many just don’t seem to bother.

Just to clarify - boas CAN carry IBD - they aren’t all carriers. But there’s no test (other than to expose a python to the boa) to find out if it’s a carrier - so it’s best to be safe.

I am still going to quarentine the boa but i was just wondering what the 6 months in quarentine does? Can the boa get rid of the IBD in the 6 months?

*Still acquiring knowledge here*

I know IBD can kill pythons, and I know the symptoms,
and that there is no testing that can tell if the Boa carries IBD,
but I have never found the answer to this question.
(still need to do more research)

After the 6 month quarantine... if the Boa does Carry IBD

How will one know if it is safe to put them in the same room,
or even keep it in the same House?

Do the Boas exhibit the IBD symptoms?

He just came today and is awsome! I just had a couple more questions on quarentining. If I hold the boa first and then the python could the python still get sick? Thanks

Yes - you need to wash your hands/arms completely, and change clothes.
(not positive about the changing clothes.. I would though)

Make sure you have Separate utensils (hemostats, etc.) for the boa.
To be on the safe side ...handle the BP first...

You should wash hands between any snake anyway, healthy or not.

And maybe get some gel hand sanitizer... I have 3 bottles scattered
around the house... just in-case I need it, I won’t have to "search" for it :o)
