I was so off on my timelines...

Originally I had Linda’s pre-lay shed marked on the 9th of April... meaning she could lay on the 9th of May ... did I blow that... it was the 6th.

Bruce

Congrats on the clutch, hope all goes well. (That was for the snake) Way to post pics LoftLizard! ( no congrats to you, because you didn’t birth the eggs.) Maybe congrats to you after you hatch them...

Oh how wonderful Bruce! Did you shake picking them up? I did. I was sure the first time I walked eggs across a room I’d suddenly trip, fall on them and smoosh them all. Amazing where a mind goes isn’t it LOL.

I’m so very pleased for you. The next 55-60 days will seem to drag, then suddenly it’s pipping day!

Congrats Bruce! Actually - you weren’t off at all on your timelines - she laid at 27 days - which is when I write mine down to start watching - any time after 27 days.

Want to get really obsessive? Kara tells me Kevin had one lay 50+ days after pre-lay shed!

And May 9th is a GREAT day! It’s my b’day! ;-)

I was so off on my timelines...

Thanks everyone. I found the eggs early this AM. It was bizarre timing too.

I was feeding Tuesday, and kept coming back to find that she has spit our her rat. And b/w coaxing her to finish feeding (she is an assist feed) I stopped to have a snuggle with my rat Scott. Scott has dementa and Jer and I made the decision to put him down as he is failing and fast. So I am holding Scott... and keep in mind he is the sweetest rat in the world.

He chomps onto my hand and starts shaking with all his might. He bit through the tip of my finger, one of those wicked rat bites that as soon as it happens you know his choppers have gone clear through and the teeth have met... and he is not letting go... she is literally tearing the flesh.

Moments like this I do not panic, I actually being incredibly lucid. So I am trying to coax him off my finger, and I can see Tuesday in her enclosure (she was on the counter) giving a flip and spitting out her rat.

I am thinking "oh great" now I have to go and handle that pup with my blood and the snake will get a taste for that... and I will wake up some night with her stuck to the end of my toe... and the realization that indeed Scott has hit that point where I do need to put him down. I already knew that, and was feeling bad that I had not done it earlier. The poor guy was in very real distress. :(

Which sucks as was one of my first two breeder males and the only one left. I got him when I got my first two males, and he has been best rat in the world.

I digress...

So I am walking around the house POURING blood from the end of my hand. I walk past the rack on my way to grab a towel... and it was like... ZING!... I see Linda is out from udner the paper and somehow taller than usual.

I peek in... sure enough. I cannot see eggs, but I can see missy sitting pretty.

I throw a quick tourniquet on my finger. I have a talk with Tuesday and explain "OK, nuff of this nonsense... you are going to eat this delicious rat and stop being such a pain in the butt". Deal with her, go and scoop up Scott and put him back in his enclosure.

Clean the counter, check the incubator, set up the incubation tub, grab the scale... I reach in, take Linda off the eggs, she gives me a looooooooooooooooooooooooong slow hiss as I put her in the pillowcase. Then I put her back in the enclosure and carry the whole thing to the counter. I detach the eggs, weigh them, put them in their box, put in the incubator. Replace Linda’s tub, give her a bath, weigh her and put and the enclosure back into the rack. Re-check the eggs. All the time taking pictures. Then check Tuesday (rat eaten). Go back and check on scott and give him a carrot.

Then it hits me... I run and wake Jerome up and tell him what happened... and he asks "Why are you bleeding?"

And I realize I have left a trail of blood from rats, to incubator, to rack and back. :)

I figured I was quite cool and collected till I saw that...

Bruce

PS: More pics to come.

Here are two pics of Miss Hiss.

First one before she got herself into this mess. Looking like buxom full figured gal...

Second one, less than 24 hours after her ordeal. I circled a section on the side, as it shows where she actually has a "fold" in her lower ventral.

I gave her a hide and she just bolted into it. She is my under the paper girl, so I never give her hides, but apparently things change after a girl has sextuplets. :)

Thanks. It always sucks, but I have hit the point where I am confident in evaluating when it is time to leave the party before it turns sour.

I put him down last night. We (Scott and I) were up late and there were no distractions as I did all my animal care in the early evening. So we hung out, ate LOTS and just took it easy.

I have one of his grandsons held back, but he is just a babe still - 6 weeks old. But cute cute cute and I think he will be a nice robust and good tempered rat.
