My new pastel girl is here!!!

Well, some of you know about the female pastel I got from a seller on Reptile Auctions. She arrived safely this morning. I did a once over on her before she went to her tub. She had some dirt on her chin and her ocular sockets are kinda swollen, but I didn’t see any sign of mites or anything else. Sorry for the crap pictures, but I’ll be getting my new camera later this week, so there will be new pictures to come next week.

I will be putting smaller, more secure hides in tonight. Now, on to the shipping blunder. The seller uses DHL which I don’t trust at all, so I was up all night keeping track of where my snake was going. At close to 1 a.m. I did a refresh and saw that the box had gone from Savanah, GA to Ohio and then to Atlanta, GA. I called DHL to find out what’s going on and they said it’s normal. I didn’t, and still don’t, see anything normal about this, but they had my ship to address correct so I just left it at that. At 9:28 a.m. I refreshed the page and it said "shipment delivered at 9:25". I looked out the window and saw the DHL truck driving off. He left the poor girl at my door! He didn’t even ring the door bell or knock. I was PISSED! I e-mailed the seller and told her about the whole shipping fiasco. She wasn’t in the least bit surprised. All she told me was that if I was going to call and complain not to tell them there was a snake in the box. Ummmm.....seem weird to anybody else? I did call and complain and just left it at the fact that there was a live animal in the box and the shipment was sent with a signature being required. I seriously doubt anything came of that conversation. The seller told me she eats a mouse or small rat a week. I’m just going to guess she means a hopper mouse or fuzzy rat. She only weighs 236 grams, so there’s no way she’s eating small adult rats. Needless to say that was my last visit to Reptile Auctions. I have learned my lesson and will only buy from reputable breeders from now on. Anyway, thanks for looking and listening to my rantings. Have a good day.

Brook

Congrats on your new pastel! Just so you know - FedEX and Delta-Dash are the only two carriers that I know of that allow shipping of snakes, so her telling you not to mention to DHL what was shipped is no surprise. You’d be surprised the number of breeders that ship UPS and DHL "undercover" though.

I’ve heard of some people even shipping using the USPS and marking the box "Tropical Fish"!

The USPS does allow the shipment of tropical fish...but not snakes!

The trick is making sure that the weather and temps during the shipment don’t drop too low. So this wouldn’t work during the cooler months.

=============================

Anyway...Nice snakie!!!

Call me later and we’ll chat about stress-assessment!

Glad to hear she got there safe. You’ve learned three valuable lessons though....

1) watch where you shop, some places online are not considered as professional as others

2) watch who you buy from, one breeder is not like the other

3) ask about the shipping method and if you don’t agree with it, don’t purchase from that supplier

I’ve never heard a good word about DHL no matter what you are shipping.

I’ve actually found UPS to be safer than Fedex. They get their packages to the destination on time, usually early, and their prices are better. Plus they don’t leave the package at the door. UPS does ship live animals, just not snakes or venomous animals(I just say they are Bearded Dragons, and it’s fine). I’m shipping a Sumatran STP female out to Kara @ NERD tomorrow via UPS and she’s fine with it. Otherwise, I would have been told differently.

I would NEVER use DHL though.. They are completely unsafe and will most likely lose the package.

Yep. Those will be my only methods of receiving reptiles from now on.

Thanks. I’ll give you a call tonight. She’s still wandering around in her tub. No retained eye caps and no mites so far. I will probably give her a bath in a few days. She does look a bit dehydrated.

1) A reputable gecko breeder I’ve done business with numerous times recommended Reptile Auctions. I now know that, regardless of my trust in this person, I should ask other people also.

2) I checked the seller’s feedback before I put my bid in. It was 100% positive with, what I thought was, very specific and useful remarks.

3)I did ask about how she was going to ship. I have had personal dealings with DHL when I was in the military. I have never had good experiences with them. I asked if she could use another method, but she said no. Now I know to trust my instincts and past experiences and just pass up the buy.
After this fiasco I informed her that I would be commenting on her shipping methods and my opinion that it needs to be changed. Now I can add that snakes aren’t even allowed to be shipped via DHL. I will be waiting until after the vet visit to submit my feedback. Thank you for looking. And yes I did learn some very valuable lessons that I hope other people don’t have to learn the hard way.

However, shipping a snake through the USPS is a violation of the Lacey Act and is a Federal Offense.

Shipping snakes through DHL and UPS are just against their policy, not a Federal Offense.

I would encourage that NO ONE tries to ship snakes through the USPS or knowingly receives one - being both the shipper OR the receiver would be a violation.

Now back to your regularly scheduled post.

And I didn’t say that I did use, have used or would ever use the USPS...

Nor did I say that I do recommend, have recommended or would I recommend the use of the USPS.

I was just stating a fact.

And I should have addressed the "Trick about Temps" to shipping in general. This way someone wouldn’t have to make the delivery time the "First AM Delivery".

And I didn’t say that you did either... Was just clearing that up for someone who might stumble across the post and assume that they COULD ship snakes via USPS.

And I also posted what I posted just to be clear to anyone who also might stumble across this too.

(We can do this all night Robin.)

Thanks, Trav. I think so too. And to think the breeder said she is mean. I don’t think there is such a thing as a mean BP. LOL!

Chuck & Robin- I think we’re clear on the USPS shipping of snakes. Chuck didn’t do it and Robin doesn’t want anybody going to prison for trying. Good job guys! LMAO!

Congrats on the new girl, she really nice. Ya I got mine with UPS, they didn’t knock or any thing either. I just had to watch for her but I got her and she was doing just fine and seems to be settling in nicely. I have seen her roaming her tub at night. Hope she dose good for you.

LOL! No thanks. I already have an aggressive white-lipped python. I don’t need anymore trouble makers. Thanks anyway, Bruce.

Mine hasn’t stopped yet. Maybe she slept last night while she was traveling and now she’s off schedule.
