 Custom Cage Dimensions?

What are the ideal dimensions for a fully grown BP cage? Also, what would be the ideal material to use? I don’t know what type of wood they use to make plywood, but I understand the concept of no pine or cedar. If anyone wants to help me out, that would be great. Also if you know of any how-tos, or can post pics of your own custom cages, that would be great.

Thanks

Well, to answer part of your post... any wood would be ok to use IF PROPERLY sealed, that’s a really big IF. Only use pine if you KNOW how to seal it. Basically sealing it (going to sound simple here), seals the harmful stuff in and keeps the snake excretement out. 30 Gallons is going to be your maximum for an adult BP, which figures out to 7000 - 7600 square inches (not exactly sure.) The dimensions of your cage shouldn’t matter as long as they multiply out to those figures and you don’t make it tall as BP’s don’t need climbing space, but prefer ground room to roam (when they do.) Here are some pics of my custom cage (I built to fit in a corner)

Building Stage

Cabinet Building

Finished

I have now made two more cages which stack on top, and I’m going to be making another cabinet/3 cage combo because my BP’s will be growing to big for their soon. The nice things about my design is 1. Can go in corner 2. Can go side by side in a room 3. Can have 3 that go around a corner 4. Can have 4 that make an island in a room. Also, each cage has glass in one side to allow an UTH and screened portions to allow precise humidity and ambient temp control. I made these cages to have a divider in the middle for two smaller snakes, or take the divider out for one adult snake.

Once we get settled in our new house I may post a pic of the setup as it is now. Unfortunately the snake/family room is solid with boxes right now.

That will allow you to see its potential and whether you’d like it or now. BTW I calculated it out and those cages are just about 27 Gallons in size, that’s by cubic inches not because I filled them with water and measured the water lol.

Very nice setup. A few more questions... Do you use flex-watt to heat them or what? If so, (stupid question alert) how are your BPs not at risk to get burned? Because of the substrate?

Thanks

Just keep in mind...Ball Pythons don’t need height. All of mine live in enclosures that have less than 7-inches in height.

It’s square footage (or square inches) of floor space that is the biggest determining factor!

450 - 900 Square inches is all an adult male or female will ever need!
