A big sigh of relief! *pet store snake problem*

Luckily this isn’t something I had to fight. I was checking up on their reptiles and getting them fresh water when I noticed something wrong with one of the BPs... Scale rot!!! It isn’t too advanced though, just a little brown discoloring in between scales. I was really worried and told the manager to MAKE SURE to clean the cage thouroughly, spot clean as much as possible afterwards, and use triple antibiotic ointment on the belly to help cure it. Whew! Glad I got that settled, the manager usually makes sure things like that are taken care of, she listens to me more than her "reptile expert" employee! (who completely REVERSED my rehabilitation of a bearded dragon there, she is a complete re-re...)

Anyway, is there anything else besides those three tips I should have mentioned? I’ll try and get pics of them soon. they are adorable! :) Very pretty coloring, too. It’s just a shame that they have just been sitting there at the pet store for months, not well taken care of....

Now it’s off to the bathroom to wash my hands for an hour and get a lysol wipe for the keyboard and mouse!!!

The only thing I would suggest is that they put the snake on an appropriate substrate and get it some vet care... but I would not have high hopes of that happening.

Sorry to hear about the BD. I assumed you would end up with another Pogona Vitticeps after all this was over.

Is the BD going to be OK? How did they reverse what you did. I know you were quite proud of your intervention (and understandably so).

Thanks,

they are on repti-bark right now, but not too long ago they were on FILTHY rabbit pellets! (never cleaned)I am going to check often for any problems. I also doubt that they will get it to a vet, if they were to be willing to do that, they wouldn’t have left it to ME to care for the dragon.

The beardie is doing alright now, but not as good as when I had him. the employee took heat off of him (making him inactive and sick-looking, luckily both the manager and I got PI$$ED and set things straight) and didn’t feed him any greens, and hardly any crickets.

I’d suggest that they do three things:

1) Remove the snake from the store floor as soon as possible to reduce stress. I’m going to assume this snake is being housed alone at this time (if not it should be since it has a health issue). Also that of course it not be offered for sale until it’s completely healed.

2) Put this snake on layers of paper towels rather than any loose bedding. Personally I prefer the plain white Viva brand paper towels as they are soft as cloth and not terribly expensive. You can keep the belly cleaner this way and see any obvious discharge easily against that white paper towelling.

3) Address why this snake got belly rot in the first place. It is usually from unsanitary, over wet substrate conditions and there’s really just no excuse for that to happen so whatever husbandry routines are off there, need to be further dealt with so this snake and others don’t end up having to go through this (also making more work in the end for the employees).

The old saying "an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure" always makes a lot of sense to me.
