What The Heck Are These?? I was handling my bp and I noticed something strange. My bp has these two "claws" sticking out on each side of his tail near his vent. What are these??

What The Heck Are These?? Those are bones called, cloacal spurs or anal spurs. They’re the vestige remains of long lost hind legs. Perfectly normal, all royals have them.

What The Heck Are These?? You can guess the sex of your ball by the lenght of the spurs. Males have long easily noticable spurs while females have much shorter spurs. This is typically true but there are exceptions. My big ball, Montie, is a female but has big spurs.

What The Heck Are These?? I would say too young. One female of mine appeared to have very large spurs as a hatchling but now that she is about 2 years you can tell they have balanced out and are quite smaller than a males. Spur size is not an accurate means of sexing anyway for even adult ball pythons. Some snakes can be sexed by spurs size and structure but having seen hudreds of ball pythons spurs of all ages..its just isnt the case for them.

What The Heck Are These?? As I understand it, you cannot definitively tell the sex of a royal from its spurs. You need to have your snake probed or popped for that. However, as a rule males have larger and more visible spurs. For reference, I also have a male about 18+ inches long and his spurs are clearly visible. They look like little claws.
