Mites? Attach to your snake and feed off of their blood. Also irritates the snake. They’re nasty little buggars.

Mites? They are very small but you can see them if you look closely. Take your snake and run your hand down his body fairly snugly and if he has mites some of them will get on your hand where you can see them. They will look like tiny black or red dots. There are several methods of getting rid of them. I have never had mites, knock on wood, but the method I would try first is to soak the snake and clean the cage thoroughly with a bleach water solution. One cup bleach to one gallon of water should kill the buggars. I believe Pelota mentioned something that is commercially available for mite treatment or it could have been Hammer. A friend of mine who lives near me got them for the first time this past summer and he has been keeping snakes for over 40 years. He used a mixture of Nix, the stuff you buy to get rid of head lice. He mixed it 1 part Nix to 14 parts water and sprayed everything down with it, snakes, cages and everything. It worked quite well. He did wash all his cages afterward and repeated the treatment after two weeks. Any treatment has to be repeated after two weeks to kill the mites that hatch out because the treatment doesn’t kill the eggs.
