Ridiculous snake law

Ok I am looking into getting a yellow-headed vine snake or a cat eyed snake. Both are rear fanged so I figured I would look up the law to see if I needed a license to own them. This is what I found out.

According to the City code lady it is illegal to keep any snake that is "venomous, constrictor, python, or carnivorous" So therefore, according to the law all snakes are illegal to own in Keokuk. I know of several species of snakes and I have NEVER heard of a snake that eats plants. I know of several that eat insects but that is still, technically, carnivorous. She told me to go down and talk with the animal control officer tomorrow or Friday. She said he gets off at 3:30 so I am going down right after class to talk to him about it. I didn’t tell them I had one only that I was looking into getting one.

While I was there she called someone to ask them about the law because she couldn’t actually find it(I told her I want a copy of the exact written law) and the guy she talked to told her the yellow headed vine would be legal. Seeing as how the vine is rear fanged and eats lizards I don’t see how they can say it is. I don’t know how much the Animal Control officer knows about snakes but I plan to educate him tomorrow. Also if that is the case and after I have the written law in my hand and that is indeed what it says I am going to be looking into starting a petition and/or talking with the Mayor about changing it. I can understand having to have a permit for constrictors over a certain length and for venomous but to say that all snakes are illegal is ridiculous. According to the law milk snakes and corn snakes are even illegal.

Any suggestions on how to go about starting a petition to change this stupid law? If need be I can have my College professor talk with them as well since he also keeps reptiles. I figure this would be a good start.

Dumb Laws...???

Let me tell you about a few from MY State...

Actual Ohio Laws that are still on the books:

In Ohio, if you ignore an orator on Decoration day to such an extent as to publicly play croquet or pitch horseshoes within one mile of the speaker’s stand, you can be fined $25.

Women are prohibited from wearing patent leather shoes in public.

It is illegal to fish for whales on Sunday.

It is illegal to get a fish drunk.

The Ohio driver’s education manual states that you must honk the horn whenever you pass another car.

Participating or conducting a duel is prohibited.

Breast feeding is not allowed in public.

It is illegal for more than five women to live in a house.

It is illegal to mistreat anything of great importance.

No one may be arrested on Sunday or on the Fourth of July.

And here are a few city specific laws in Ohio...

Akron

It is illegal to display colored chickens for sale.

No person shall solicit sex from another of the same gender if it offends the second person.

Skateboarding in the city limits after dark is prohibited.

Posting signs at swimming pools is illegal.

Bay Village

It is illegal to walk a cow down Lake Road.

Bexley

Ordinance number 223, of 09/09/19 prohibits the installation and usage of slot machines in outhouses.

Canton

Electric fences are banned.

If one loses their pet tiger, they must notify the authorities within one hour.

"Power Wheels" cars may not be driven down the street.

Ironton

Cross-dressing is against the law.

Paulding

A policeman may bite a dog to quiet him.

Youngstown

You may not run out of gas.

And my personal favorite...Toledo

Throwing a snake at anyone is illegal.

And as a word of advice...I wouldn’t go volunteering the information to the Animal Control Officer that you already have a few snakes!

Maybe let them know you were inquiring about the law because you want to get an exotic (but harmless) snake.

Don’t you have a Pet Store in your city that sells snakes as pets?

some states, especially ones in the bible belt have some really stupid laws still.. pretty much in line with the ones listed above.. thats why i love california.. we can have almost anything here.. certain cities have their specifics like frisco and probably L.A. but where i am i am all good.. pretty much i would say if you can get it where you are then no one will find out about it unless you tell everyone.. from the way it sounds yuou already have some snakes you aren’t supposed to so whats another one matter in my opinion.

Allot cities have laws against or limits or something against exotic animals.... Ridiculous of course, but that’s how things are. Its getting worse too. Its best just to not advertise these days that you keep "dangerous" reptiles and what not. people are stupid and find whatever reasons they can to come up with new laws..... Just saying......

In my city I’m not aloud to keep dangerous animals within a 1000 feet of a school zone, cant have more then 5 animals on my property and of course the Florida ROC thing...
Well, I live in a school zone(theres fricken schools everywhere!!!) and keep several "dangerous" reptiles, and of course have about 3995 more animals on my property then I’m legally aloud.

Pfft... Kings Island trumps Cedar Point by farrrr, I mean come on, we got the backwards racer, Son of the beast, the flight of fear, and now the diamond back. I haven’t been in years but I would still rock some coasters :)

you obviously haven’t been to cedar point. no amusement park in the world tramps cedar point. the dragster, millinium force (which i rode front seat when it first came out in the rain even after someone offered me 50 dollars to sit there), raptor, mantis, gemini, power tower, and the new red one i can’t think of just to name a few. I love love love that place. i can remember back as a kid parking the boat up there right outside the gates on the lake and just running up there when it opened and running around the park riding all the rides while there were no lines and then getting stamps to go to the front of the line during a certain hour.. ahhh such good memories.

Sara has a tendency to be somewhat delusional about certain things...This being one of them.

Cedar Point has been voted many times as the #1 Roller Coaster Park in the World.

Cedar Point has been voted a few times as the best amusement park in the USA.

Kings Island...???

Not so much!

For the record....If I had a choice of a weekend at Cedar Point and any other amusement park...I would choose Disney World! One day in Magic Kingdom and one day in the Animal Kingdom!

Expedition Everest is probably the best roller coaster ride out there! It’s a good ride but the entertainment factor is awesome!

I really don’t see how you could go wrong with cedar point. If you didn’t live in ohio and go to cedar point all the time you would choose cedar point over some silly place in florida. unless of course you had kids and wanted them to go there.

all night.. there were commercials about Cedar Point amusement park.... I live in quebec dang it! I tihnk the TV knew I saw this thread and decided to put those commercials on.. Ive never seen them before
