Is this a problem? Severus has been acting a bit out of the ordinary recently. He is a juvenile BP, about 7-9 months old. He is in a spacious 20 gallon high tank with day and night heat. The hot side runs from 85-90 degrees and the cool side runs 75-80. Until about a week ago he was in a half cut tree bark type hide from the pet store. I built a wood hide box (12" X 7 1/2"). It is made of untreated hardwood (not pine or cedar). I do have trouble keeping the humidity up, but am usually okay with misting and a drip system. I handle him no more than 5 times a week. He has slowed down on eating. He only eats about once every 10-12 days. The main problem is that he is digging underneat his water bowl and just staying there. I’m afraid it is either too hot (yesterday the hot side got up to about 95 because it was warmer inside my house) or not humid enough. The water dish is a very heavy resin or something and filled with water it weighs quite a bit more. Is he going to get stuck under there? Also, how can I keep the humidity up where it belongs 60%-80%?

Is this a problem? For humidity you can put a small bowl of wet towels or paper towels over the heat pad and cover the top of your tank with plastic (leave about an inch on each side for ventalation. It is likely you Bp just wants a secure hide. Offer them in the warm and cool side of the tank and use boxes with a hole cut in them so they are secure all the way around and not just over their head like the tree bark hide. your other bos sounds fine and i would just offer more hides of a variety of sizes. Good luck.

Is this a problem? Thank you. I hadn’t thought to put multiple hides in the tank. Room ultimately will decide what all I can put in the tank. Eventually I will build a new habitat for Severus.

Is this a problem? I have found this to be a usefull trick, hope it helps. for a water dish, I use a walmart dogbowl, the cheap plastic ones with the handles cut in the sides. for 12 bucks it’s a good combo hide and water bowl and my snakes seem to use them well. also u can build a humid hide on the warm side using a steralite container and sphagnum moss, put moss in container, mist moss to keep slightly moist, cut hole..hope some of this info helps.

Is this a problem? Great idea! The only problem I have had with doing this that the snake sometimes turns the water dish over when he uses it as a hide but that really doesn’t matter as long as the snake doesn’t stay in a soaked substrate.

Is this a problem? I find if you take the snake, put him in the corner of his enclosure and sternly say "bad snake, very bad, no soup for you!" the tend to.....well ignore you and do it anyway...but it is amusing.

Is this a problem? Tried it! He then evolved and squeezed the life out of me! But hey, you only live once.Actually, this is a bit of an update. He has now taken to living under his water dish and just stays there. I know that some snakes sort of hibernate before they lay eggs, but that is only if the temp drops too low. What is the problem?

Is this a problem? I pulled Severus out last night to check on him and do some maintenance on the terrarium. He’s getting ready to shed. I figured it was about time. Part of the problem has been that he is usually very active at night and he just hasn’t been. The shedding speaks volumes, however. His skin is graying and his eyes are fogged over. It’s a few days out, but I think that will take care of everything. Thanks everyone for your help and input.
