 Need help with cage ideas.

I posted this on the "cages and enclosures" forum, but also thought this would be a good place.

Here is a picture of Anouk’s (male Ball Python, 2 1/2 yrs old, 1042 gm, 43 inches) current enclosure (40 gal breeder tank). I have tried to put things to climb to climb on in it such as drift wood and cage length round horizontal wood rods. As a baby he would sometimes climb in his 10 gal tank, but not since he has gotten older. He climbs on things when I have him out of his cage, though! One time I tried to make him a tunnel to crawl through, but he didn’t seem impressed.

I want to make sure he has the most mentally stimulating environment possible. He is out of his cage for several hours each day, but I would like him to enjoy his enclosure as well.

I saw where someone had made climbing/tunneling things for their snake (can’t remember what type of snake) out of ferret tunnel pieces. I also have seen people make indoor "trees" for their snake to hang out on when out of their enclosure. Does anyone know if a BP would like something like that?

Any ideas on how I can make his tank more comfortable and interesting? (I don’t have a very big budget though!)

Yeah, I think our snakes feel they ought to be free range :) I had to get Anouk a skid/tip resistant dog water bowl.

I would just make it how you want it. Your bp wont really care what the cage looks like as long as it has hides, heat, and water. I just try to make cages look as natural as possible. The only cage that doesnt look good is my new baby hypo jungle ph albino boa. The reason for that is i got him from an expo and he had a few mites. I think i solved that problem and am waiting for a week or so to make sure before making the cage look great. You could try adding a branch or two tho even tho it doesnt seem to get used as much. I didnt think my snakes used them that much but i will wake up in the middle of the night and look at a snake with an infared light on her cage and she will almost always be in a tree. It also adds usuable room in the cage

Here are a few dif pics of some of the enclosures & dif decor I have/had:

They Love the vines.. they crawl under them, over them, rearange them, lounge under them... etc.

BPs are not "climbers", they will crawl over and pretty much crush whatever they like...
So I don’t suggest Live plants :o)

Just to give you some ideas lol

man thats alot of plants.... fake may thay be its alot... mine never come out wile im up and seem perfectly happy with just 2 purple bowles with a hole to hide in and a pyrex pie pan with water. thay both do seem to really enjoy comming out with me especialy my male eli. when out he is allowed to explore all he wants with me 3 feet away at most. but most of the time he just likes to crawl around me. but simple news print and somw where to hide and water in the cage seems to keep them happy.

just a simpler side of options...

I really like the vines idea. That would give him some more things to crawl through and hang out it. He hasn’t been able to get much use out of his foliage because they go flat too easily. The vines would really help keep them up a bit.

Thanks,
Nichole

 Need help with cage ideas.

Went to the store today and came back with some wooden dowels to prop the vines up a bit so he can crawl under them, a basket for basking, two tunnels, a multi-opening hide thing, and light blue paper to cover the back and one of the sides with.

I was going to work on his cage today, but went to see the movie "Paranormal Activity" with a roommate instead! Oh well, it gave me a chance to feed Anouk a day prior to cage overhaul. I plan to work on it tomorrow and will post pics when it is done!

Posted pics on a new thread. I wound up not using the wooden dowels. I used suction cups instead. The tunnels were a flop. I put them together to make one 2 foot tunnel. He crawled through it until his head poked out, but would not go all the way through. He tried to back out and wound up having problems with that, so I had to unbury the tunnel, lift it up vertically, and help him slide out. Needless to say I scrapped that idea! The multi-opening hide thing (black plastic step stool from the Dollar Store) was too open where I had it so I made it more snug. If he doesn’t use his basking basket I will take it out and try something different. I am still trying to figure out how to add a climbing branch that he might like. Picky boy hasn’t liked other attempts. I hope he likes his new "burrow" hide.
