 Humidity too high?

I have been having troubles with humidity because my house gets dry in the winter. I was using aspen, so this weekend I switched to cypress mulch. Now my problem seems to be the exact opposite! I didn’t add any water to the mulch at all, but my humidity gauge has just said "HI%" for the last 24 hours. Usually it’ll give me a number value, but "HI" must just mean 100%? He’s shedding, so this is probably not as bad as I think. Anyone have any suggestions to get the humidity lower? Thanks!

Jake

 Humidity too high?

bake the cypress mucch before putting it in the cage- this will dry it out some AND kill any bugs that may have hithce da ride. I hav eused cypress before and didnt bake it, 99% of the timeit was bug free, one time, i saw some bugs in it.
once yu bake it you have ot let it cool off b/c it will be very hot! and just keep an eye on it in the oven.

once you bake and its cool, put it in the cage and see what the humidity is at. if its low again, you can mist the substrate and mix it up a little, and keep doing so til you get the desired humidity range.

a few days with high humidity wouldnt cause much concern as long as your temps are good- hi humidity an dtoo low of temps can lead to an RI if its constant ( not saying this to scare you)

If you can
t bake it, you can lay it out and put a heat lamp on top of it, or jst let it air dry - it will take some time but will work if your place is really dry.

Nate- yes, cypress mulch will help BUT as you can see, it can make the humidity way too high as well- somtimes it comes way to moist, sometimes it doesn’t. it can vary from bag to bag and from where you get it from. Back when I used the cypress i had a tank and used a heat lamp as well, so it dried outpretty quick when i didnt bake it.

I do like cypress mulch, just have to bake it a little first to dry it out and make sure there are no bugs in it. But once that is done., it hold humidity wll b/c it can witshstand misting and hold in humidity better than aspen.

Another option if you dont want to do all that prep with cypress is get a dish and se either damp paer towels or damp spagnum moss ( the moss stays damp longer_ and put it in a dish on the warm side. f you use a tub, this is all you’ll prolly need. Tank- you may need few dishes in a corner. But as long as the papertowels or moss stays damp, it will help with humidity.
