 Several Questions

1. How hot should i let the warm side get? I get it around 92 and my ball doesnt really venture there. She always stays at the cold side which is around 80. and the humity is 60 on the warm and 65 on the cold.

2. Is a heat mat good enough to keep my ball warm at night? cause i heard its bad to leave the heat lamp on 24/7 so i always turn it off during the night... but the cage gets around 76 degrees.

3. How often should my ball eat? i had her for 8 days and i fed her twice already. Shes about 1½ feet long right now. I feed her small / medium live mice.

4. I have two hide boxes made out of card board boxes and i was wondering if i should use a clay flower pot instead. and if i should, where should i break a hole for her to go in.

5. last question.... my ball likes to go underneath the water dish and will lift it up just to get underneath it. This is a heavy dish, its actually heavier then she is. So i always take her out after she forces herself in there cause it seems like it would crush her, or she would get stuck. Is it ok to just leave her in there?

thanks in advance

 Several Questions

1. Generally, good temps to keep are: Warm side- 90-95 Cool side- 80-85. If your warm side is 92, that’s perfect if you ask me. What are you using to measure the temperatures though? If you’re using stick on thermometers or something like that, your warm side might be hotter than you think, which would likely keep your bp on the cool side. Just a guess though.

2. It would depend on how warm the room your bp’s cage is in is. Only way you could find out is by turning off the heat lamps and just using the heat pad, and seeing what the temperatures stay at. Usually the cool side will be a few degrees within the room temperature the cage is in, so your room would have to be around 80 degrees to keep the cool side up without a heat lamp. Or you could pop another heat pad under the cool side, and have it on a lower temperature setting controlled by a thermostat.

3. You generally would feed a ball python once a week. Feed it one rodent that’s the same thickness as the snakes thickest part.

4. I myself would use proper sized clay flower pot bases since they’re low to the ground, come in a wide array of sizes for your bp, are cheap, and are easy to clean. I would be wary of using cardboard for hides, since they might get soggy and moldy after a while. For more info on proper hiding spots, click here.

5. As they mention in that hide spot FAQ I linked you to, that can generally be a sign that your bp isn’t being offered any hides that they find safe and comfortable. A ball python likes to cram themselves in small, tight hides. I’d take a trip to walmart(atleast that’s where I found my flower pot bases) and get a couple of different sizes. I bought 4 pots, two different sizes, for only 4 bucks. 1 dollar each at Walmart. All you have to do is take a hammer, and knock a chunk of the lip out for an entrance hole. There is an instructional video at the site I linked to that will show you how to easily do it.

Hope that helps.
