 Breeding and morph questions.

me and my friend have thought about each of us getting a morph bp to produce more morphs and split the profits. we dont know anything about breeding but ill have about 9 months to research it before we actually start with the breeding. what i was wondering is if it is a good idea in the first place!
1. what (in your opinion) are the best morph to start out with to start a collection.
2. for our first morph, we wont be able to spend more than about 200 on each one.
3. i was thinking about getting 2 mojave and making a lucy?

opinions, advice, questions/concerns, etc. all appreciated.

 Breeding and morph questions.

You will be spending close to $600 for a pair of mojos to make leucys. You could get a male spider, and a female pastel, and raise them up, and produce Bumblebees. You could get 2 pastels, and make supers. You could also get a pair of het somethings, and produce higher dollar morphs. Maybe $450 for a het pied pair. But there is no way you can get a pair of Mojos for $400. I gound a guy with great animals, nice quality, and his cheapest female Mojo was $325. Males at minimum are $175, and that is a VERY low end mojo.
My personal opinion is look around on the web, find something in your price range that intrigues you, and go from there. You can also go to a local reptile show/expo, and find even better deals. You Might can find a pair of Mojos cheaper than normal there.

My best of luck to you

Matt

 Breeding and morph questions.

thank you so much matt.

some more things ive been wondering...

1. what is the chance that you will actually produce what you are hoping/expecting to produce? for instance, you say that i could get a female pastel and a male spider to make bumblebees. what are the chances that i would get bumblebees? is it possible for them to create anything other than bumblebees?

2. im concerned about the conditions of reptile shows. ive read a few articles and although ive never been to a reptile show, it appears that the snakes arent kept in good conditions. from what ive read, they are kept on display in tubs that are too small and without the proper temperatures. they are hardly removed from their tubs and are not handled with care. the horror stories are endless, and im wondering how the hell im supposed to ge a snake then? i dont agree with having them shipped , ive heard from breeders not to go to petstores, ive heard from animal activists not to go to reptile shows, and i dont knw what to do. what are your opinions?

 Breeding and morph questions.

Most of the time they are kept for a couple of days in those while they are at the show. If the python looks bad just don’t buy it. Look here for some info on genetics Link. Any morph at a pet store will be CB. If you can’t spend that much you will have to buy local and save on shipping. You might have to spend $500 for a pair of mojo’s or you can go for a mojo spider cross which are less cool but worth about the same.

Chances are still the same as explained the first time around ;)

Answer number 2 is pretty much the same as well.

 Breeding and morph questions.

To Dball: If you are breeding normal to het, you will not get albinos. I explained het to het breeding in my post that you commented on earlier about my new addition.

As for reptile shows, I want to say that you have your good, and your bad. Yes the snakes will be in small display tubes/containers at the show. The reason being is that you have limited space, and the move will be stressful for them no matter what, but it would actually be more stressful to try and move them around in their normal containers. Also, you will find a big difference between what people offer. For example, I went to a show in San Antonio last weekend, and there were 2 vendors right next to each other selling baby BPs. The first guy had pretty cheap prices, but you could tell it in the quality of the snakes. The 2nd guy’s prices were significantly more, but the quality and coloring of his animals was way better. I would much rather have paid the higher price to get reptiles that display the quality characteristics of the breed. Remember, if you just buy what’s cheap you will get what you pay for in most cases. And since you want to breed them to sell, remember that the lower the quality you start with, the less they will sell for.
I actually went to the show looking for a 600-800 gram male pinstripe. The first guy had one at a really good price, but the color was so faded it didn’t even look good. I passed, and instead I found a spider that was the same age range and had incredible coloring. I paid a little more for him, but definitely worth it. I have bought a snake through the mail, and at reptile shows too. I would say I am definitely more a fan of the reptile shows because you can see what you’re getting. Not all mojos are created equal, and that goes for any other morph. I think you would be looking at a minimum $300-$400 for a quality mojo female if it’s a baby. Hope that helps.
