Some ball pythons will go on a hunger strike from time to time. My big girl ball stops eating around the first of November every year and doesn’t start back until March. We offer her food every couple weeks or so just in case but she refuses it.

Here are a couple things to try. Feed your snake in a separate feeding box if you are not already doing that. Feed her just after sundown because balls are nocturnal and most active right after sundown. Cover her feeding cage with a cloth to give her some privacy. Are you feeding frozen/thawed? If so, leave her in the feeding box with the mouse over night but make sure that the temp in the feeding box will stay around 90 or so. You can put it back in her cage if necessary. If you are feeding live, watch her until she strikes and constricts but don’t leave them together for more than 30 minutes. This is for the safety of your snake because the prey wins sometimes.

wow thanks. i feed it live. my room stay at 60 degrees. so i cant feed it in a feeding box i have only left the mouse with the snake for about 10 minutes the most. the snake seems afraid of the mouse. when the mouse runs up to the snake and crawls on it the snake is afraid. what should i do.i dont want to kill or hurt the mouse if the snake doesnt want to eat it so i can save it for another day.

now u get to try something really fun, go to your local pet shop and buy a frozen mouse, then go to wallmart and buy a pair of long cooking tongs for .94 cents. When feeding time comes, place the mouse in a ziploc, then in warm tap water to defrost, when completely defrosted, dangle said mouse in front of your snake. It’s a huge advantage, online packs of frozen mice are cheaper than live, you get the thrill of watching it strike while your holding the tongs, and u never have to pay a vet bill or bury a snake cause of injury caused by the food item.

probably not, but it’s better to start the snake feeding on f/t now. The sooner the better. There is a pic of a young ball on this site that had a not so pleasant encounter with a food item, and it’s better for u as well. Much cheaper to buy rodents from bigchease or rodentpro than to buy live.

I really like the way you put this idea into words. It gets the piont accross without starting anything. Very well stated. Kudos!

Ty, and btw, I have never used a separate container to feed my ball. If they are going to be picky eaters, I would wonder if that would interupt their desire to feed, I really don’t know, try f/t in cage first if dangling doesn’t work, try leaving it in over night. Just some thoughts.

My about year old BP just went about 7 weeks with out eating. I tried 2 separate white mice and a baby rat nothing. Every day I’d put them in, the snake would check them out and then ignore them. I had read about trying a gerbil. With in one minute of being in the cage the gerbil was lunch. I was happy but at the same time mad at the pet store. At first they wouldn’t sell me a gerbil to be feed to a snake (that’s how I ended up with the baby rat) and then I went back to the store when someone else was working and had to pretend I was buying a gerbil for a kid. BUT IT WORKED!! And I do feed my BP live. Sorry to offend some of the people out there!!

I had something similar happen the other day at PETSMART. They wouldn’t sell me any mice for feeding. MICE FOR FEEDING! Mice are like the cattle of the rodent world! I almost started yelling right there in the middle of the store. And get this- they bloody well sell crickets! They even sell carnivorous reptiles. THEY SELL BLOODY MICE! What kind of pet store would have a problem with legitimately feeding your pet? Oh well, the prices are too high anyway, so I won’t be going there anymore. Sorry, had to let out some steam.

The good news, bp’s are quite likely to eat girbils and hampsters..the bad news, those are expensive and the bp may not ever go back to mice or rats if u feed the others oftern. The worse news....girbils are nasty as rats..and just as capable of killing your snake, doesn’t offend me, it’s just pointless and serves no perpose to feed live 98% of the time, I will concede that 2% of the snakes out there will give u problems with f/t...I will also state that 98% of the people who claim to have these snakes are not being honest.

good thing you didn’t get a mouse from petsmart to feed your snake, petsmart puts flea stuff on the rodents they sell, it is very bad for your ball python.

I have a friend that works at my local petsmart, he has two ball pythons and he has to go to petco to get his mice, and yes most of them in there don’t know much about the animals they sell.
