 Help convincing mother?

Well I’ve been planning on getting a ball python for the past while. This Sunday I was going to a reptile expo. My mom was okay with all of this until we went to a pet store today an a guy showed us a ball python. I’m not sure how old it was, but it wasn’t very big. My mom is useed to the young cornsnakes my sister has owned... none of them got anywhere near full size. So when she saw the ball python she kind of freaked out. She was absolutely terrified!. I get the feeling she isn’t going to let me get a ball. I’ve been trying to convince her that they’re very good snakes but she was just so completely terrified... Anyone have any suggestions?

I have owned both Corn’s and BPs, as well as several of the others here.

Corns are more apt to bite than BPs.
Corns are more active, especially when Out of their enclosre
(being held, allowed to roam, etc.), and are quite quick at escaping.
Corns are more forgiving of human error
   (set ups, temps, etc.)

BP juvies Can be a bit nippy in the begining,
but usually calm in a short period.
BPs are more apt to bite if there is some thing wrong in their enclosure
(temps/humidity off, * if you smell like prey, heat sensory and aroma
can trigger "food mode", just as well as with any snake, etc.)
BPs are Less forgiving of human error (set ups, temps, etc.).
BPs are Less active, they spend most of thier time in their hides
   (80%-90% is normal)

The majority of snakes are nocturnal (active at night),
so it would be rare to see them in day time hours, unless
they are moving from end to end, to thermoregulate.

The "potty mess" of a BP is (to me) easier to clean up,
as Corns are known for not so solid poop, where as
a BPs poop is more like a cat turd.

Although on a rarity, BPs can get quite long, their length is much less at
adult size... geral size , females 5-6 ft, males 3-5 ft
but BPs can be quite wider than a Corn... which can reach up to 7 ft,
but more the size of a large garden hose...

Corns are quite slick at escape
BPs are rather slow, but can be on the fast side, if needed (danger, etc.)

Go back to the pet store, (also be prepared for Mites -
info posted in the SETTING UP thread)
Have Mom hold the BP, just for a minute...
Never know, she may want one too *wink*

Thanks for all the information. I’ve been planning on making her go back... although it wasn’t very pretty last time (I made her hold it and it moved... she let out a very, very loud scream.) But I know if I got one she would end up liking him.

When i got my first snakes (ball pythons when i was like 13), my mom made me keep all of them in the garage. She didnt want them inside. After about a month they were allowed inside, it didnt take long for her to warm up to them. Just keep at it, you’ll say something to convince her sooner or later.

No offense but why would you want to get a BP if she’s terrified of it? I can understand trying to convince your mom if she just doesn’t you to have a pet, but isn’t that kind of mean? I guess if you were trying to get her over that fear though, that would make sense. Well either way, good luck. ^..^

I wanted a BP for my first snake to but my mom said absolutely no snakes, but she said okay after I told her I would keep it in the basement. Now, 2 years later I have a BP, cornsnake, blood python and 2 boas, one being over 6 foot and most of them are upstairs in my room lol.

My mom was absolutely terrified of snakes period. no snakes allowed, until about 2 years ago when a reptile place opened in town (which is gone now. the store not the town). we went in to get crickets, the owner explained a little about ball pythons, convinced her to hold one ( a baby), and we left with a snake. I had an extra cage, and he stayed in there till I got a cage ready for him (about a day and a half). An impulse buy, you say? I suppose, but if I waited, she’d have changed her mind. today I have 3 ball pythons, and am hopeing to get a boa of some sort this summer.
